Changing differential fluid - A step by step "HOW TO"

Just confirming in the first post of the instructions it says that LSD additive is not required for 2009 and newer rear diffs. Is this correct.

 

Correct...Toyota stopped putting true mechanical LSDs in the Tacoma by then.

I have a 2014 TRD sport and I need to do everything Front diff, TC, and rear diff. Already bought my crush washers, now I just need oil. I am hoping I could use the same oil for everything. I always stick with mobil 1 synthetic motor oil, so can use I mobil 1 synthetic 75w - 90 gear oil for everything and have no issues?

Or something else you guys recommend?

Whats the deal with the rear LSD in the 2009 and newer trucks, do they not have clutch pads and that's why the additive is not needed?

no sticker on my rear diff, but I didn't want that to be the deciding factor because it could have fell off hitting a speed bump in the mall parking lot trying to pick up babes

 

Parts department guy was a dumb shit, kept giving me uhhhh yea answers sounded like a autozone employee. And the service department never answered their phone. I do not have my Toyota service manuel, its just a maintenance booklet but it doesn't say, what type or weight oil for the truck.

 

anyone here have a Tacoma service manuel and read it to me? That would be so awesome : )

$29 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 on all.

 

Changed my rear axle oil today(this was the first time that I did the change). Used Royal Purple Max Gear 75W90. That replaced a BG synthetic. Got a smoking hot deal via eBay on 6 QT. Pretty straightforward job. Had a little difficulty removing the fill plug. Had to blast it three times with PB Blaster. Replaced the plug gaskets. Lowered the spare tire to make it easier to fill the axle.
Torqued to 36ft-lbs. with a Tekton ½ torque wrench( 10-150ft-lbs.).

Does truck need to be level to fill correctly? Starting to dribble out even after letting it sit for a few minutes. So I can't put in the 3 quarts

Tons of pages to go through. I have a 2011 TRD Sport with 4x4.

Will this be all I need to complete this maintenance:

6 qts 75-90 weight gear oil (Front, Rear and TC)
4 oz of LSD additive (what brand and do i refill the entire rear diff with only 4oz?)
24mm socket

Am I missing anything else? Thanks for the help in advance.

 

You don’t need the additive on a 2011, but your list looks good.

 

Yes it should be level as if rolling down the road and shifting. You could tighten it back up drive around a little bit and then check the fill level again to see if you can fit the 3 qts but if it is coming out you should be good assuming you drained all the old stuff.

 

I got 7 qts just in case I needed a little extra or spilled to much but 6 should cover it.

 

Good call seems to be popping up a lot lately.

 

Thanks man! Got a bit confused when OP said "Sport models require LSD additive".

Now that I reread his post, it says anything newer then 2009 does not need the lsd additive, even if you have a sport model.

 

Just wondering to get oil into the diff do you need a pump and hose that fits those 1 qt bottles or do those 1 qt bottles with the narrow tip fit in to fill hole and is there room to tip it up so it all goes in?

 

Front diff will require a hand pump because of the angle. The rear diff and tcase (at least if your truck is lifted) I was able to just squeeze the bottles in. Non lifted trucks may vary with that. The rear diff definitely drop the spare tire and just squeeze in but tcase might be tight without a lift. Look at the bottom of the thread and the Amazon list has the basic stuff you need.

Thanks. And being in Canada I hate looking at the Amazon.com links below. So depressing. Just below the 1qt of synthetic oil is $8.79USD that same qt in Canada in around $25 CAD which is about $20USD... so depressing seeing those prices and being in Canada.

 

Is there a correct direction for new crush washers? Rounded side (hump) towards the differential or the drain plug (bolt) head?
