What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I got tired of the auto so this is gonna happen soon. Got the engine with it for a fair price

 

Currently in the process of getting an OEM pair warrantied. Installed right before RT and after that trip they had a slight amount of play and now 7500 miles later, if that, I do not trust the one. Not sure if there was a bad batch or what.

I have yet to ride in a solid axle vehicle that rides decent on bumpy roads, probably my biggest reason for not having interest in SAS.

OK, I totally get that we're exceeding the design capacity of various parts and sometimes things just break. The truck had just endured 1,000 miles high impact washboard. It should have broke sooner. But, of the ball joint failures you've see, how many sheared the shaft vs popped out? The reason I'm asking is because popping out seems predictable based on play where just cracking apart seems harder to detect ahead of time.

If this subject has been worn out here, sorry, I tried posting over in suspension first but got no replies. Then ball joints came up here.

I would kind of agree with them. My Tacoma kicked some ass on 33s IFS and a crawl box. Is it fun since the SAS, sure, but not as fun as before.

 

Bought this today. Needs a little work and I’m going to plastidip it! Good price though!

 

Any cv issues with the crawl box?

 

there is a point where a line is crossed, even with IFS, that these trucks loose their magic that makes them so special. They you just have to push it to make it a monster..then its fun again. But limited still.

I think just a taco with a very small lift, but good shocks, 32/33'' tires, a locker in the rear and some skid plates and a rear bumper and its perfect. Super capable, peppy still, fun to go fast, fun to crawl, still hauls the furniture around.

Was it an OEM ball joint?

 

Nope. Broke one on the 8th year of having it with IFS. I was crawling in double low talking to someone, the truck hit a rock, and I goosed the throttle on accident and snapped it. Im surprised I didn't break more, I would lay in to the throttle at times in double low.

The only real reasons I did the axle swap was to get a front locker, the truck physically would not fit down the trails I wanted to run and all my friends were wheeling on 37"+ tires.

 

Still fun, I drive it to work all the time, and use it as a truck. It's actually faster now with 5.29s and 37s then it was on the 4.10s and 33s. But yeah I get what you are saying. Even better when you pull up to a trail ride in a damn near stock looking Tacoma and slot in behind the rock buggies. They give you the wtf look, and assure them you will be fine, and you usually are!

 

Finally found a shell on Craigslist for a 1st gen double cab with 50/50 windows. It was a steal of a deal. Drove up to Encinitas and picked it up this morning. Super stoked.

 

Bumper mounted up, still able to pull off a table on the swing out. I rarely get this excited about a table.

 

How’s the glass bedsides hold up with the shell?

 

A lot of interior supports going in... Between the access holes for the coilovers/towers, gas tanks, and fiberglass bedsides definitely lost a lot of the structure.

 

Today I decided to go ahead and do a manual locking hub conversion and also did a front diff drop it was fun

 

New carrier bearing and All Pro leaf packs put on today
