starter troubles '96 2.4L 2WD standard

When I try to start my truck, I hear a single click when I turn the key, but no turnover. After multiple attempts, the truck will eventually start! I recently put a new battery in there, and now I'm looking to repair the starter.

Is it possible to repair the starter? 96 tacoma 2.4L 2WD standard transmission. Or do I have to replace the starter entirely? One mechanic said that the starter in my truck is not serviceable and I have to get a whole new one. Is this true?

If I can rebuild, which repair kit to pick up?

The starter on my 97 did the same thing years ago. At the time I worked at a John Deere dealership and as I pulled the starter out of the truck one of the old as hell techs at the dealership told me to leave it on his bench and to go get a set of contacts for a John Deere 870. I did, they cost about $5 and they were twice the size of the toyota ones. We installed them in 10 min and I put another 130k on that truck and as far as I know they are still running strong.

My truck had the 2.7 but I assume it is the same starter. The tech laughed and said yeah those starters never die, the contacts just wear out. Easy as hell to replace. Take the four bolts of the starter apart, break it down and they set right inside. Bolt in the new ones and off you go.

 

Great Mechanic to say the starters are not able to be rebuilt .

Thanks y’all! I had a little trouble sliding the starter out but it worked! Started up perfectly.

When I was cleaning up I realized this piece got left behind! Is it crucial? Worth removing the starter and doing it all over again?

 

Wow. There are whole shops that do nothing but rebuild electrical stuff like starters and alternators. He must have gone to the mechanical school of R & R. (remove and replace). It does make more money for most shops, I'll admit.

Maybe. It looks like a wire harness retainer? You don't want that cable/wires moving and getting chafed, burnt, etc. Look it over and see if you can tell where it goes. PS, zip ties are NOT your friend in this case. Eventually they'll fail.

Just a wire holder, make sure no wires are rubbing on anything and you should be good, zip ties WILL work for holding wires away from sharp objects

 

is their an oem rebuild kit for these starters ?

 

It's just the starter contacts inside solenoid. Common issue, plenty of videos out there if you are handy. Getting the starter out is the issue... probably easier on the 4 cyl though. Parts available on line too. The starter motor on these is definitely a lifetime part as Denso makes a rugged one. The contact that gets burnt the most is on the hot side but change both while you're in it. When you get it apart the problem will be quite obvious. If you keep driving it like this it could leave you stranded but a mild blow to solenoid will make enough contact for that "last" start.
