buy something that fits your hand, Work on the basic fundamentals and it will translate over to most other weapon systems.

worry about training with whatever firearms used in service while in service. They will train you and then you can always do more training on your own time once you join

Not, really. I just want to be employed on a boat. My goal is to serve until I'm 21-23 and join the Texas Highway Patrol afterwards.

That's something I was thinking about, my hand is really skinny and long. I don't want to start with something that is too big and overpowered for my hand size.

Haha, well you'll have no shortages of opportunities to be employed on a boat.
If your goal is to do 4 and go HP, then I'd say maybe think about being a "Master At Arms", or "MA" for short.. Which is the Navys Police.

My background: 8.5 years of law enforcement and currently compete in USPSA.

I’m going to go against the grain a bit here and say to hold off on “learning” to shoot a handgun. Odds are you will develop bad habits before the Navy can teach you the correct way to shoot. Also, shooting a handgun is, from my understanding, a very SMALL part of what you will learn during your initial training.

That said if you want to learn to shoot find a good instructor. Take a class or 5. But, learn from shooters. Not yourself. Or your dad. Or anyone except a shooter. Have fun.

    I’m a fan of the Glock 19.

I have a Ruger SR22 and it's a very good gun. I'm thinking about an LCP2 for my next handgun purchase.

There is something to be said for that. When I was on the trail the easiest soldiers to teach marksmanship to were the ones that had never touched a gun. Usually the guys that had the most trouble qualifying were the ones that claimed to be great shots as civilians, not always the case but often enough.

Well, from my 14+ years in the Navy, the only guns you are going to learn to shoot are 5in autocannons and 20mm seawiz PDCs.
Look at what the current issue models are (Sig229, Beretta 92, AR-15, M-14, Mossberg 500 when I was around) and buy one of those.
Then learn by taking some classes. In the Navy the only rates that handle guns on a regular basis are the MA and SEALs. Everybody else does it as an additional duty (boarding party, ship harbor security).

Just get comfortable shooting. I doubt your future in the Navy will have much focus on small arms! More importantly get comfortable shooting with your hips square the the target with both arms locked out and center mass. I assume they are still enforcing that stance anyway.

I think that’s the sidearm of choice for the Navy but the CG moved to the Sog 226 DAO many years ago, like 10 years ago...
The best shots in BC were the ones who never held a firearm because the never had the bad habits. Fucking sucks when you’re a gun guy and the MF next to You who never held a gun out shoots you cause they don’t have the bad habits.
Well, the military doesn’t use glock so... bad advice all around.

For what I know of boot camp, they just teach a basic course and no advanced clearing or tactics so, still invalid.

Up until a few years ago, some branches taught on a simulator and not on real fire arms so...

Well, welcome to the military and the bottom of the barrel. You’re gonna be a scrub until you’re rated. Your job will entail scrubbing dishes, serving officers and cleaning their state rooms until you’re rated. It’s the standard for all the branches. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

the military shoots 9mm or .40 and it’s the beretta, the Sig 226 or the new 320 so, get used to the bigger gun if this is career you choose.

Well he’s wanting to join the navy, not the CG, so the 92fs is still applicable.
‘Twas the complete opposite in my experience.

This is good advice. Proper training first then a simple and reliable revolver in .38 +P.
