To determine if it's real try to make it "fog" with your breath (diamonds won't) and/or put its flat side on top of a piece of newspaper and see if you can read any of the print thru it (real diamonds are just a hair "cloudy" and you won't be able to).

All else fails take it to a jeweler, they can test it more scientifically than that.

I found one under the carpet of the Miata I bought, shat a brick for a moment but it turned out it was a CZ, so the change I found under there with it was probably worth about the same.

 

It cuts glass like butter, tested it on a coworkers van mirror. Not sure if CZ does that.

 

It will. Glass is lower on the hardness scale than a lot of things, CZ included. There are a number of other crazy properties to test but the "scratch a mirror" one sadly doesn't tell you much other than the fact that it's not a bad fake made of glass.

I just googled it and apparently you can UV light it and they will demonstrate at least a faint fluorescence. (cool!)There's also a destructive test where you heat it up with a lighter for 30 seconds and then drop it into a glass of water. Diamond will survive but CZ will probably shatter from the inside.

 

Not all diamonds fluoresce under a black light, only some.
