HamTestOnline is a great tutorial site. There is a fee, but they have all of the test questions, and with a few evenings of work, you can easily pass the test. Even less study required if you aren't an idiot when it comes to electronics and radio waves!!

I just ordered a Timben suspension kit. It has never taken much to bottom out my base model Taco. Hopefully this will be a cheap easy fix.

bout a half inch clearance, and doesn't quite fit between the U bracket. good thing its made of rubber. it tightened up the ride, and I'll have it under load next week while camping.

 

Changed the oil for the 3rd time now. Finally feel like I understand the "art" to removing the 3rz oil filter without making too much of a mess. Tried a Napa Gold filter this time with my usual Castrol GTX 5w-30. $22 if I buy the oil at home depot and filter at Napa. Feel like that's a good deal compared to $45 at Toyota and an hour and a half of my time.

 

yep. Worth it, what i used for the hour and a half drive up to take my test. I passed no problem haha

That's not bad at all. Hell doing a driving license cost more than that lol. Your range on your ham setup in Frank is what? 10 miles on average?

 

fuck no, more like 30-50 miles. When you add in use of repeaters it can be hundreds. I can talk from southern MT to Central Wyoming via linked repeaters. If you go with a digital system and hit digital repeaters you can talk anywhere in the world practically. Then if you have APRS you can text cell phones from almost anywhere for emergencies too.

 

50 miles alone?!? Fuck I'm getting a ham setup in the truck lol. Even though there's fewer people using one it's a potential life saver in emergencies

 

at 50w in fairly flat ground yeah. Its all in the antenna tune though mostly. If you're up on a mountain you can hit shit pretty far. Hell just my old 5w handheld would hit repeaters almost 30 miles away.

 

Alright, that's what I figured. Cell phones are pretty sketchy in terms of coverage. Which is why I want to get a ham radio, I'll have a spot device for sure though. Back up plans on top of back up plans
