    May 24, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- New Concealed-Gun Law Enacted in Arizona

In a significant liberalization of its gun laws, Arizona's Gov. Jan Brewer signed legislation allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons without a permit in most instances and denying local communities the authority to enact gun legislation stricter than state law. The law becomes effective 90 days after the end of the current legislative term.

Gov. Brewer told the Arizona Republic, "I believe this legislation not only protects the Second Amendment rights of Arizona citizens, but restores those rights as well."

Arizona will maintain its permitting process, but in most situations a concealed carry permit will be optional. Only those who carry concealed weapons into bars and restaurants serving alcohol and those who plan to carry a concealed weapon across state lines will be required to get permits. For those who do obtain a weapons permit, the law no longer mandates hands-on experience or a set number of training hours. Up until now, eight hours of training covering state law and gun safety was required, as well as demonstrated proficiency by hitting a target 14 out of 20 times.

Promoters of the new law avoided opposition by the Arizona chiefs of police when they added provisions requiring honest responses to police questions about carrying concealed weapons, with a lie punishable by six months in prison.

Arizona plans to continue background checks for gun purchases and permits, as required by federal law.

The provision of the law prohibiting local communities from enacting gun ordinances more restrictive than state law will undermine local efforts to keep guns out of public parks.

The concealed carry law follows on the heels of a law exempting guns made and kept in Arizona from federal regulation. A lawsuit is pending in Montana over a similar law exempting state-made guns from federal regulation. The federal government contends the Montana law is superseded by federal law, and Arizona may find itself in the same predicament.

    It's good to be free.:D

At first glance, without reading the details of this law, my first questions is: what do police do when they pull over or stop somebody with a concealed weapon, with a criminal record, and they were on their way to commit a robbery, unbeknownst to the police, at the Stop and Rob? I'm all for concealed carry without a permit, but surely the criminals can't legally carry a concealed weapon right?

If they are criminals, they shouldn't be in possession of a gun. This law is for law-abiding, free Arizonans.

Whether the law allows for everyone to carry concealed or not I suspect the bad guys have been and will continue to carry unlawfully, the only change this new law would make is that there will be a greater chance there will be more honest citizens armed and capable of defending themselves or others when said knucklehead makes his felonious debut.... And perhaps said knucklehead’s career will be a one night stand…

Good for Arizona, they join the likes of Vermont and Alaska and perhaps a few other states I'm not aware of, where concealed carry is allowed for all non-felons. With the way the federal government seems to not give a damn about the well being of American citizen residents of Arizona I'm pleased to hear they have been given by their governor the means available to protect themselves. Again I say good for Arizona.

The law does not affect criminals, since by definition criminals don't obey the law. Like Packerfan said, this law affects the free citizens of Arizona.

The governors choice of words really resonate with me.

18 years of age to own any rifle, shotgun or handgun.
However, you must be 21 to purchase handguns or handgun ammunition from any dealers.
That being said, your handgun would have to be purchased from a private party, face-to-face.

There is nothing to indicate to me so far that it wouldn't be 18 and up.

I'm all for Arizona residents, and US residents for that matter, being given the right to carry concealed guns but Arizona is broke and was taking in over 2 million dollars a year from the issuance of conceal carry permits. Where's that money gonna come from now?

I vacation in Arizona and I have a carry conceal permit in NC. NC has reciprocity with Arizona meaning I can bring my gun into Arizona and conceal it legally. Which is good because I vacation there alone and go hiking in your parks. The gun is not just for bad people that I may come across in the wilderness but for mountain lions and rabid bobcats you sometimes have.

Now if you would just stop closing all of your parks I would come back.
