Hmmmm I didn't even realize that most of my forks now are from 2014/2015. Granted Im a rockshock/dorado dude, but have they made any significant upgrades/changes to the recent forks? I typically always buy used for my stuff with the exception of my dorados as they were new in the 27.5 size at the time.

One of my old dorados had a nic on the lower stanchion and it kept leaking after I sold it to a guy. I gave him a discount, but he ate about $125 to replace the stancion and that was a shop hook up at that. With that said, being a 2014 with a nic you may not get much for it currently without making it 100%.

I always shop to see what the "PB" market is for something before I would pull the trigger on something new as I believe that the standards of quality parts have created considerable longevity so used stuff still has a lot of potential. If you find for a 2017/2018 fork you like is comparable to the $700 range and you want the upgrade...then you know that you arnt really missing out on the deal. Keep in mind though that jenson will likely have some legit july 4th sales coming up.

$500 (effective cost) is a shit-ton of money. Is it possible to just replace your uppers? Even if not, ride that fork till it dies. Just because the stanchions have a dent doesn't mean the fork is useless. My 2 cents

This is a theme where I live too. Tacoma, Subaru, Mountain Bike. This is our fleet. 2005 Outback and will buy a new one when the 05 dies. (a dear tried to kill it last week but a new fender should keep it going for a few more years)

Sounds like you got a smoking deal. As it's your first bike I wouldn't upgrade/swap out anything on the bike that's not related to fit (seat, peddles stem) for at least six months. It's just as easy to get upgraditis with a bike as it it was tacos and can be just as expensive.

I also have a similar setup with the CBI bars and Rocky Mounts Switch hitter rack. I don't fully trust the fork mount system so I usually use a strap for extra reinforcement when going off-road. Looks like your rack is a Thule? How much trust do you have in it?

I don't ever worry about it at all honestly. If I were pre-running in the desert I may strap the seat post to the rack for some additional support, but honestly, the bike mounts are designed for a ton of stress.

Nice. I figure if the axles hold up to the abuse of riding then surely they're fine. Here's my similar setup just for kicks.
