Getting the FRN is a great idea, as you don't have to give your social security number to volunteers. However, It doesn't make the filing process any quicker. That's entirely up to the VEC. How quickly they file paperwork with the FCC. Laurel VEC is one of the fastest, getting it done in < 24 hours. AFAIK, the ARRL is the slowest.

I'm a Laurel VE, and last time I tested on a Saturday, call signs were issued Monday morning by 9am. When I took my test with an ARRL VE, I recall it taking just over 2 weeks for my call sign to show up.

Thanks for the issue. Looks like the only text in the future for Laurel is on a Monday at 5 am, 2 hrs away from me. The one this Saturday is with ARRL. Fingers crossed. Hopefully I can get it before our New England TW Waterfall tour. Would be nice to join comms.

Mine just came in .5 days after testing with ARRL. Hopefully you'll be just as quick.

I just updated my call to a vanity call last week. Any idea when they will notify me if it went through?

Just got a UV5R to mostly use in Baja for races but was wondering how I can use it on the trail in the states if needed? Is there blm/forest service? Something like that frequencies I can call in if theirs an emergency and theirs no cell service. I’m a total noob to this radio stuff.

Not exactly. It’s not a marine radio where the navy and cg monitor any channels. First, to use it in the states you need to get a ham tech license. Very easy and cheap. Then search your area for repeaters and clubs to monitor and talk on those frequencies. A lot of repeaters have “auto patch” that allows you to use your radio to make a local phone call.

No worries about being a noob, ask away.
