60+ year old thread.

Been hot and humid since Friday here Sue.Probably worse in the Carolina's! Been working outside all weekend and then working yesterday about 3 pm it got nice and toasty.

Yesterday was my wife Pam and mines 35 year anniversary! Great milestone for us.Had a number of ups and downs over the years but we Are still here.Seems like the only problems we ever get into is over family.Trash has never been an issue,l'm the anal one in the family!

Going down to Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery today to visit mom and dad. Dad would be 98 today.

 

Hot here in the N Kalifornia mountains today, finally in the low 80's. Low 40's this morning camping with the pup, slept in to a little after 6, did not want to get out in the cold. Must be getting old to not take that kind of temperature. Priming my Coleman 344 marine stove, uses kerosene.

My dad would have been 90 on the 14 and mom 92 on the 15th.

 

Nice day overall. I have an issue with Moms gravestone that might take a while to resolve.

We went out to lunch at one of my Dads favorite restaurants after the visit. I can remember going to the restaurant as a little boy with the family.

 

Hope you get Mom's gravestone issue resolved Tom. Memories of the good times spent with the folks are the best. I look at some pictures of years past and they bring back fond memories of my childhood.

 

I will resolve it one way or another. I will try through the US Department of Veterans Affairs first. If there is no solution I will seek political help.

 

Speaking of taking trash out -- we got a letter from our trash collection people a few weeks ago offering to let us "lock in" to collection rates for the next 3 years. I used it as a reason to shop around and found out that we've been overpaying for a while. The first price I got was 1/3 of what we're paying now! So we call up the current folks to cancel; they ask why, we tell them, and they offer to match the 1/3 price.

I'm glad we'll be paying less but it makes me mad at myself for not checking rates more often.

 

Reading about the cold weather and the rain some are having. Send the rain out this way please. 2700 acres and growing by Durango and another 600 or more about 10-15 miles from that one. They will probably merge as they are so remote with no access. All the San Juan Mountains are closed so no 4 wheeling for us. Fire crews doing a hell of a job keeping it away from homes and hope to keep it out of Durango. This pic is from my house in Cortez about 60 or so miles away

 

Evening all:
We have no option here on garbage, the township has a contract with a company and we are billed. I wouldn't even need garbage collection, we can burn and I have enough area that I could manage to have a small dump for compost and also recycle some items. Even if I were to do that, I would still have to pay for garbage even though I wouldn't have any to pick up.

I like the above pictures, NOT the fire!!! Stay safe, way too many fires out in the West anymore.

Thankfully I live in the county - don't have to pay for trash pickup. I take it to the dump/recycling center. Compost pile gets all fruit/vege scraps, if it can be recycled, it is. I'd probably pay for the convenience if I lived in the city.... what pisses me off - the city recycling truck goes right past my house, but because I'm in the county he doesn't stop So, I don't pay for just trash pick up for my one kitchen bag of trash once or twice a month.

Brother and S-I-L live in Junction. Someone a mile or two away had a fire get away from them a couple days ago, thought I heard helicopters associated with fires.
A couple of my neighbors pay for not only garbage pickup, but for rental of one of those big containers. I take my trash to the transfer site, $7.53 for two cans which I take in every other month or third month, a fraction of what they pay for one month.

I just read a post on another thread that just doesn't make sense to me. A guy posted that he found a 2.5 hp kicker that he was thinking about buying for his 16' boat. He asked if it would be appropriate to use to get him back 10km if something were to happen to his main motor. Most replies said it would work, but it would be very slow and that they wouldn't want to have to depend on that small a motor if it was windy and the lake was rough, and almost all recommended a 9.9-15hp motor.
One guy posted that by going from the 2.5 to a 9.9 would only increase speed by less than 1mph, that just doesn't sound right since the 9.9 has 4X the hp of the 2.5, I have my doubts about that post!

 

He's not wrong per say.
My boat would only increase like 5 to 8 mph going from 40 to 70 hp I was told.
Your behind the power curve because you are displacing water and not on plane.
9.9 on a 16 foot boat won't be very fast but make a lot of wake.
My boy camps on a 9.9 lake and they have 17 foot boats. Lots of noise, lots of wake.
Very slow..

 

Here ya Mike! I have a 4.5hp kicker on my 17' StarCraft, at full throttle there's lots of noise but not much wake because it's very slow!
I would think it would be like going from a 30lb E trolling motor to a 70lb E trolling motor, neither will put a boat on plane but the 70lb will move it faster.
I've seen it posted about what you said, guys jump pretty much in HP only to gain minimal mph, now if you were to hang a 200 on your boat you would notice a BIG DIFFERENCE, of course you might then need to install some big flotation pods!

 

Repo pup was doing some stealth fishing this morning on our backpacking trip. Praying for fish I think the other day.

What a privilege to be the father of three sons ( remember the old tv program "My 3 Sons?) With that privilege comes a tremendous responsibility to live as you would have them live. I think I did a better job later than in the beginning.

One thing is certain: I love them and they love me. Life is good!
