Its another pop up camper the one that Iggy helped develop. Its a wedge camper like GFC. Its heavier and bulkier but has a bigger sleeping area and room to stand up.

Man, I am have trouble finding things to hate about this camper. Pretty good walk through.

 

I still don't love getting in through the tail gate, not really another way to do it, but with my wildernest that was the most annoying part I think. The hole is just small and you have to jump up an crawl through on the bed. And that was on my single cable which is the lowest truck I have. I found it annoying, someone like you(no offense) will find it almost challenging. Plus you'd need a nice step stool just to get on the tail gate.

I hit my head more times then Im proud of in the few times I had it. Luckily the wildernest area was padded..sort of.

though the GFC latch looks bigger than the wildernest.

Im excited to see Brett's in person. It is a very appealing platform for what we do.

 

Over $6k is what gets me. I will admit though, it does look pretty sweet.

 

yeah that hurts. But considering the quality of it and how versitle it is. Almost worth it.

But god damn thats a lot of money. Id rather link the rear end or do a v8 swap with that money.

 

$6k is more than my 4Runner was used! Luckily I had a kid so guess I can't get the GFC, just too small. I will stick with my blackpine turbo tent.

 

No offense taken. I would definitely carry a step stool to get in. Already carry one anyways to setup and closed down the RTT.

$6K is a lot of money but I spent that this year to keep up with all the required maintenance. So from that perspective, spending the money for something I would get a lot of use out of, seems more reasonable.

 

There are several issues with roof top ladder side access.

 

Exposed to the weather and having to climb over your partner to get out are two that come to mind right off.

That's true..but thats money well spent. Hard to do that all on one thing. Though not crazy.

 

I was just saying to Mike last weekend that I would like the ladder too, though I thought hanging it off the back would be better since that would mean not climbing over whoever is inside. I figured you could deploy the ladder only when going to bed (in fact, you could probably do that with the whole tent since it just pops up), so the tailgate could be out of the way at that point.

Dunno. As much as I think they are cool, I also don't love that it hangs out over the cab (both the height and look). What I really wish was that there was some way to have it be bed-length when closed, but longer when open.

 

aka..a flippack. Which has its only issues. Or habitat. Which is just insanely pricey. Its hard to meet that as a design requirement for our small trucks. impossible even with the double cab short beds. At least not without it being too complex.

The wildernest almost had this concept you're talking about nailed down. But not quite as it didn't get longer. Though I slept in it just fine with Devin and the bed was smaller then our tents right now. But it is a lot of tent flapping up there, it needed some rethinking for wind resistance. And the whole structure itself really, but it was 20+years old fiberglass/wood.

You could use a ladder off the back pretty easily that clips into the t slots I think. Would just have to be done with the truck access when you used it.

I don't mind the over hang too much on the extended cabs with the 6' bed. Its pretty short compared to the short bed version.

Either way, I bet once i see one in person, it'll change a lot for me. Still doubt Id ever cough up that much money for one.

 

I don't mind the over cab aspect except for its into the space where the ham antenna is. Overall, it is no higher than what I have now.

And yeah, when the weather turns, it would be great to have a space to get out of it and not bring the shoe debris into the sleeping area too.

 

This is thing I was talkin to devin about the other day. Some many try to make the back a nice place to be all the time. But I'm like...what if you end up in muddy snowy shit and have to get certain tools out or recovery gear. Stuff is gonna get messy.

It was nice that no matter how bad it got, the RTT stayed cleaned always.

 

Ahh, I guess it's conceptually similar to a flippack - in that it lengthens. But I was thinking more along the lines of something like this:

However, dust and dirt would render that a PITA after a few big uses. It would be a pain to keep that slide working great over time Id suspect. And I think it would make the bed even narrower possibly. Plus it really complicates the roof section. Really that complicates a lot of things..haha

But is an idea...

 

Definitely more complicated, but I bet it could be made to work, even with dust - by having a rubber compression seal on the end(s) of the slide when it's closed so that dust never gets access to the machined sliding mechanism. And it wouldn't really make it any narrower - you could get plenty of strength in a very narrow channel, I think. Maybe on that end portion, you'd replace the space currently used for exterior attachment extrusions with the sliding mechanism.

In the end, it's just ... which you're shelling out a lot of anyway for one of those. hahahaha
