I did remove the airbag, and steering wheel (you don’t have tu remove the entire steering wheel) the leather is good... I try to keep my hands clean when I drive my cars and that helps to keep the leather matte.. I’ve put some leather conditioner and it really looks good after almost a year.. I totally recommend it if you are detailed oriented and have lots of patience... it took me a day... lots of cursing but it came pretty good..

In 2013 had the base radio (6 disc changer, no nav, sat or anything fancy) in my 2010 VW go completely, inexplicably dead at 40,000 miles... Dealer said "too bad; a new one is $1600 plus installation." The radio was still inoperative when I pulled into the Toyota lot to buy my 2013 Tacoma. Fricking VWs and their dealers. Never again.

So your VW was 3 yrs old and 40k miles. Is that out of warranty? Would seem so.

Surely you don't think a Toyota dealer will have a different response when your Tacoma radio fails out of warranty?

Call corporate and ask to speak with someone with management and authority regarding your ticket, or even better yet, call in without referencing a ticket. They may have your info by name, VIN and/or phone number but you need to explain it to them from a saftey standpoint as in when turning the steering wheel, the extra leather creates an obstruction for a complete and smooth turn. When they hear “saftey” they will be all over it. Think a few years back of the run away prius’s. For them to replace it is a chump change than for “something catastrophic” to happen and taint thier image and sales and make it into the news. That will cost them more. Don’t approach it from a cosmetic angle, even though if it’s not to standard, they shouldn’t be categorizing warranty based on severity in the first place. Make noise with corporate. It will take a few calls and complaints of how you spent top dollar, MSRP on the highest trim only to get quality less than that of thier lower trims.

Nah brother, the Toyota dealer is totally going to drop $1600+ to replace a radio out of goodwill.

He would get nowhere with a lemon law angle.

I do realize it was 4000 miles out of warranty, but it was still under the time frame. Honestly, I'd hope for a little goodwill or sympathy -- I mean really... a radio dying at 40K? And that was just the latest in about 5 recent trips to the VW dealer for various glow plug and other electrical issues. The car was crap and the dealer had zero interest in keeping my business.

Hope you can get this resolved to your satisfaction. My '17 has ~8,000 miles and the wheel leather is nice and tight...symmetrical and has none of those issues.

The last pic you posted really shows off how poorly the wheel was assembled/finished. Should have never shipped like that.....on any trim level.

Finding your regional customer quality group contact may be the best route. They should have more power than one dealership and have more direct involvement than the CEO/Toyota Motor NA
Found this map from a simple google search (and it pulled up a tacomaworld user's profile, credit: cowboyup_again).

    Good luck!

What about taking your truck into a leather shop that does custom leather interiors and ask them for a professional opinion with an estimate to fix.

Looks like the leather is not cut right. Could be an easy fix for people that do this sort of thing for a living.

    Just an idea.

The regional guy was the person that actually denied me first. The dealer just put it in for review. Than I submitted through the Toyota site and still haven't heard from anyone on the issue.

I'd get it fixed at a local leather shop. Send Toyota the bill.

Has anyone successfully done this? I would highly suggest doing everything in your power to have them agree to fix it. Pose it as a safety concern (which it is); may escalate priority.

    Drama vs get'er done.

Toyota already declined his argument which is bs but hey. Every day driving with that mess I'd be pissed every time I got in the truck.
