I just switched to synthetic oil at 69,000 mi, i always used conventional oil but i figured it was time to switch, so far it seems to be running smoother and a little cooler.

I find that the 5 qt jug is actually more expensive. Check out the Unit Price. I usually compare prices at a few different retailers, and can always find it cheaper by the quart.

I use Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic. No complaints and I like it pretty well. It is also a few bucks cheaper than Mobil 1.

okay. Serious. This is bugging the living shit out of me. I used Mobil 1 synthetic and then i went to get a oil change and the guy said there out of stock so i put in royal purple. and for some dumb reason one of my friends friends has a Nissan 300z and keeps saying its better? Whats the difference? From Mobil 1 synthetic and royal purple.

The difference is minimal. They're both excellent oils. Don't worry about it.

I bought the Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic on my second change. The first was free with the dealership. I thought it was $13 because Walmart can't keep their shelves organized. Turned out to be $23 for 5 quarts and $4.50 for 1 quart (I knew about the 1 quart). I basically paid the same as having the dealership after I bought the filter.

At the moment, I'm using whatever cheapest synthetic I recognize is in stock in 5w30. It's been Pennzoil Platinum, but they were out last time so I'm running Mobil 1 now (it was $3.50 more expensive for the 5 quart jug of M1 than for PP).

Yes, but the dealership oil is not synthetic unless you ask (and pay...a lot) for it.

I've been running Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30 for about 2 years, and recently had my motor apart for a blown head gasket/cracked head. It looked like what was detergent build up from the cleaning agents in the oil... or so the mechanic said. I've been told that Valvoline is a clean oil to run, but also Mobile 1. My motor has 246,000 miles on her, any suggestions on a type of oil/filter I should switch to from Pennzoil?

Mobil 1 is awesome, and the stock OEM filter from Toyota or a purolator filter, wix filter, mobil 1 filter. Is all good filters. I would also recommend running some Seafoam though the engine, and fuel filter change if needed.

Sounds like a good idea, I'll definitely give it a shot, and I'm pretty sure that I'll be using M1 from now on!

Valvoline Synthetic or Durablend...synthetic for the Taco because after waiting 24 years to buy the 2nd truck of my life...I'm gonna keep it for a long, long time. :D

Valvoline because my family developed a friendship with some racing (local short track and drag) families back home in Virginia when I was 14 years old. Asked the oil question one day and the answer was a question, "what brand do you see all these racing guys using?" Back then the only answer was Valvoline...been using it ever since and it's never let me down.

That was 31 years ago...that little jaunt down memory lane made me feel my age all of a sudden. I miss ole Bobby Combs, he was a helluva mechanic, racer, and man...I learned a lot from him.:proposetoast:

    Rob

PS: While stationed in UK couldn't get Valvoline...used Castrol...why? because that's what I saw the majority of the European racers using. Guess some lessons learned as an impressionable teenager stick with us.

So you should switch to Mobil 1 since it's the official oil of NASCAR

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
Just a comment, racing oil is so far away from oil used in street cars, its not even close.
Oil makers and manufacturers like there name out in the public eye. Does that mean one oil is better than another? Probably not, all company's involved in any sort of racing do extensive research into making sure their oil holds up to the heat and stress of racing.
Typically, as all the members of this forun know, frequent changes and good quality filters is what works.
I have to admit it would be nice to be on the inside of any of the major manufacturers labs to see the kind of development and base line criteria they use for racing oils.

Yes, this is very true, I've been leaning toward valvoline because I had a good friend of mine show me the inside of a motor on a ranger that he'd bought from a guy a few years ago. This truck had 290k on it and had only run conventional valvoline in it since the day it came off the showroom floor, and it was by far the cleanest inside of a motor I've ever seen. I've been running Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic, and I wasn't entirely pleased with how clean my motor was.
