2018 TRD PRO Grille w/ TSS-P Radar Info/DIY

mine is not OEM, way too expensive, but not ebay either. I got mine from cali raised but ive heard its the same thing as the ebay ones. really nothing special, just cheap plastic looking

 

Drove to 80 miles in ATL traffic today and it worked flawlessly..btw ATL sucks!!! I installed OEM grill and garnish.

 

Ok, reporting back. I removed the ghetto license plate bracket fake garnish with which I was having all kinds of problems, and installed the OEM garnish.

I drove around for about 45 minutes and it worked flawlessly. Radar cruise works perfectly, no PCS failures, no clean sensor warnings. I drove in rain and dry and worked well.

Still don’t know why the ghetto garnish didn’t work for me and did for others, but this appears to have done the trick. I’ll reserve full judgement after I have a couple days of no failures, but today was the first time I have gone for longer than 10 minutes without one.

Last night I modified another plastic piece to sit right against the radar box, and clamped it between the grill screw nuts and radar. Going to try that today, but after hearing your success I'm thinking I may cave for the garnish I really don't like that glossy non-uniform piece. grrr.

 

Can anyone provide the most recent information regarding the little locking washer things that hold the stock garnish in? I'm thinking I'm finally going to swap my OEM Grille Section out and install the 2018 OEM Garnish. Still have no issues, but tired of looking at it on my desk.

Also, after this is done, is anyone interested in the OEM honeycomb style insert?

Threw the same error despite the plastic being hard fixed directly on the surface of the radar. Shoot.

I'm thinking now it's gotta be the honeycomb pattern and thickness differences and horizontal walls causing the issue if the radar is mounted just so.

May give it one more shot before I cave to the factory garnish. May custom cut a piece of flat black plaric and try that first. Really don't want to go full gloss haha.

 

I tried the ghetto method as well since I didn't want the glossy cover. I did a quick test drive and noticed a few things.

Initially everything was working fine. No errors or warnings while driving on local city roads and moderate traffic on the freeway. But when the traffic lightened up and I had no cars in front of me for a good distance, the "PCS Off" light came on and got the clean sensor warning. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not but when i exited and back onto local roads, the light turned off and everything was back to normal.

I think mdiprimio might be onto something in that it may be interference from the honeycomb pattern. Also, perhaps it could be a proximity issue and we are mounting the plastic sheet too close to the sensor? I noticed that on the original grille the sensor has about an inch or two of space from the toyota emblem. It seems like the garnish sits a bit further from the sensor too...

 

I mounted my plastic piece on the honey comb and have about a 2inch gap between the sensor and plastic. I also only used enough plastic to cover the two holes only. No issues here and I’ve driven with it in in all types of situations.

 

I glued the plastic piece of mine directly on the honeycomb piece as well and only used enough plastic to cover the 2 holes. No errors so far.

 

This is what I did, and had all kinds of problems. My thought was also that it had to do with the honeycomb pattern. But OEM garnish appears to have fixed it for me. Don't know why.

 

Mine went off the first day as well. Like you, I have a 35-40 minute commute and it went off toward the end. (Knock on wood) It has not gone off since. I did the license plate holder mod as well. I am not a fan of the shiny garnish and it won’t fit my Chinese grill anyway, so happy all is well

 

It sounds like there may only be a couple of variabilities left between those that have no errors when using a plastic sheet and those that are using the OEM garnish on an non-OEM grill.
1. The type of glue or epoxy used to attach the plastic sheet. I used DAP 00155 adhesive.
2. The distance between the TSS module and the plastic sheet. I'll measure this when I get home next week.

 

My OEM '18 grille arrived last night and I quickly realized a simple license plate cutout wasn't going to work (pic below). Ended up grabbing an OEM garnish at a local dealer today on my lunch break, with a 15% Costco coupon. I'm thinking maybe just a clear matte vinyl overlay could cut down on some of the shine? Anyone have any ideas on that? I know I could spray it with a clear matte finish, but hoping for a less permanent solution for now.

You know, sometimes my brain just decides to make things more difficult than it should be. Derp didn't even cross my mind, but that's probably what I'll do initially to see how it goes. Luckily I have a few cans already laying around. Thanks for the heads up!

 

Do you remember what size lock washer you got at Ace by any chance?

Edit: After scanning through about 20 pages, consensus seems to be 1/4", for anyone like me and didn't read the whole thread before posting a question...

 

Another day of driving with no errors. I’d now confidently suggest OEM garnish for those still having issues. It’s a bit pricey, but worth it IMO.

 

Glad it’s working now and that it wasn’t a bigger issue besides some ghetto rigging.
I just drove about 100miles with it on and the radar worked and controlled my speed perfectly. Sucks that we can’t really narrow down what our differences are.

 

Dang! I tried one more configuration....may cave if this doesn't work....sigh. I hate not understanding something and not being able to solve a problem!
