While out getting estimates...don’t forget to ask the shop manager for a tour of the facility to see existing repair work going on...if they say no because of insurance reasons just throw that estimate in the trash... all reputable shops will be more than happy upon request and without delay to give you the nickel tour!

Sorry, but a good Paint store with a seasoned paint matching person can match anything pretty good. When I bring in a sample panel to match I have never had an issue with them matching the existing color. Never heard of a paint job devalueing a vehicle in fact quiet the opposite. Which would have more value on a 10 year old vehicle, one with faded paint or a fresh paint job. Obviously if the vehicle was in a collision you would be right when it comes to value. Take a New vehicle straight from the dealer and put a custom paint finish (or color) on it, I think the value just went up. The only way a paint finish will bring the value down is if the finish was not done right. A top Auto Body Paint Shop will match any factory finish with ease. God Bless $.02

Maybe it's different where you're from man, but honestly if you took a brand new car off the lot and did a custom color paint job, the value went down anywhere around here. People just dont know what was done to the vehicle to need the paint. Original paint 100% would always be better imo. I have buffed cars half a century old and the paint looks better than new (if the paint is all still there lol.) But OP has a brand new truck. I know the colors can be matched really well but the actual orange peel is much harder to match. Like I was saying, when I'm looking the car over for a detail, it always shows up really quick. Personal opinion here, but looking for a couple year old low mile GX460 for my wife, and any one that the carfax shows "other damage" or that it's been in an accident, I completely skip over. When I find one to like at, I'm gonna put a paint thickness gauge all over that thing before I even need to take it for a test drive haha.

GX460?? I see them racing around here all the time bro.

    Just kidding, no I dont.

I was wondering if the seats from one of them would fit in a taco plug n play tho?

It's a granny mobile. Prolly has some real comfortable seats.

Toyota not known for the best paint matching. I think my MGM Taco is 4 tone, and it's pretty obvious. Not sure why they paint all the plastic to match the metal parts on the sports, it only makes things worse.

Lol. I'm not sure if they would fit in the taco, but it would be really cool if they did. Heated and cooled with power adjustability would be really nice.
Yeah the GX's are just really fancy 4runners, but you get all time all wheel drive and the V8 which would be nice for me to get to drive every now and then lol.

Body shops are always going to paint an entire panel and blend, if you want touch up contact one of those dent less paint companies. They will do small area repairs.

I would go aftermarket if you can. Dented the bumper on mine and made more sense to order a pelfrey rear and now it's bulletproof

You're right about matching the orange peel from the factory, I tend to paint it really wet where there is hardly any so you are correct.

I think you missed that in my first post. Most good paint guys can get the color pretty spot on. That peel is tough to get a perfect match though!

I’d touch up your paint chip and repair the bumper. I would keep the paint from the factory if possible. From my experience. Easy to do and not too expensive. See the links posted above for guidance about removing the bumper and caps. Unless you’re itching for an excuse to get a metal bumper.

OP, whatever option you choose, don't forget you'll have to go to the dealer to re-align the sensor.....!! I hear that is a hundred or 2...

I fucking love these kinds of posts!

“I jacked up my 40k truck so I took it to a professional to get their opinion...but I don’t trust their professional opinion, and I’m cheap, so let me go on the internet and solicit opinions of people that don’t know wtf they are talking about!!”

30 seconds later, “armor” and “plate bumper FTW” ensue.
Then a bunch or people who have never fixed a car start talking about how the shop is lying, how the paint will never match, and how the vehicle is going to be devalued..and then give a bunch of opinions on what they would do to fix it.

If there is a chip, thru the paint ..you can:
    A. Use some touch up to fill it. It will NOT be perfect, it WILL be noticeable, and depending on how neurotic you are, it might eat you alive every time you see it for the rest of the time you own the truck.

    B. Pay to have it done right. Which will require the shop to feather out the paint around the chip, spot the repaired area, and then clear the whole panel.
Because..you need to extend the clear to the nearest breaking point of the panel, being the complete other side of the bedside.
No reputable shop with a half decent warranty is going to try and burn clear into a panel on a black car.
There will be orange peel, but anyone decent with a buffer can knock it down and match the texture of the existing panels.
You also have to replace the flare, the clear chipguard, and the plastic trim pieces attached to the bedside because they are taped on and non-reusable.
They also have not accounted for anything they may have missed, or could find after they take the bumper apart.
$1500 to replace a bumper and paint a bedside sounds pretty reasonable compared to what I could probably write for the same thing.

The right question the OP should be asking is “how can I get it fixed right but cheaper?”
And the answer to that is:
    1. Ask them to discount their labor rate
    2. Ask them to give you 10% on parts
    3. Ask them to give you 10% on materials.
    4. Ask them to take a base coat deduction on the refinish time on the bedside panel since they aren’t technically painting the whole panel, only clearing it.
    5. Have them commit to the estimate they gave you. No supplements for clips, fasteners, or parts price increases. If it doesn’t end up being what the estimate says, they have to eat the difference.
6.Have them commit to having it done in a set period of time or they are paying for your rental car. It should take about 3 days, 2 if they pre-order your parts.

Or just go thru your insurance, pay only the deductible, and take the hit for 3 years.

I love all of you guys, and i know you mean well, but seriously sometimes giving uneducated responses to things you aren’t qualified to speak on is more harm than good.

Took it to another shop. Heard much the same, and the guy writing it up found and pointed out a few things that the first shop missed.

    @JS760 is right....

I’m going through insurance so my only exposure is the deductible.....after that, I don’t care what it costs, I just want it fixed correctly.

Dropping it off Wednesday morning and picking it up Friday night. I’ll post pics of the finished work.
