    Put new 30'' tires on my stock '10 2wd tacoma. Was looking into a regear to regain the stock performance. What gear comes stock in the automatic 2wd 4 cyl trucks and what would be the best gear to regear to? thanks for any help! love this forum!:cool:

    If you have a five lug then you should have 3.58 gears with the automatic. Unless you want to go up to 4.56, which would probably be way too low, the other options are to find a used set of 3.73 (from a 6cyl) or 4.10 (from a 4 cyl) from a 6 lug taco. I'm not sure if there are other options for correcting the speedo, but there is the Dakota Digital (corrects the speedo) or something like a Scangauge (external gauge). I have no experience with the Dakota Digital, but I have a ScanguageII which works well, but your odometer and speedo will still show the wrong values.

    you are talking about 6 lug trucks. It would be impossible for him to have a 6 lug truck because the 2TR-FE is not available with the automatic transmission on a 6 lug truck, the 5 speed is the only option on the PreRunners and 4X4s with the 2TR-FE (the four cyl)

    5 lugs come with stock 215/70/15R which is a 26.9" tire. i have 29" tires right now and i do notice a loss in performance, but I do have the 5 speed transmission that has 3.31 gears. I know i need to regear, but with the auto's higher final drive ratio, the need to re-gear is less, but depending on your use may or may not be applicable.

    oh yah and the autos are much easier to re-gear than the 5 speeds, so if you do decide to re-gear, your in luck!

    Of course he will notice a difference, I do also but I promise my tire change is much more invasive than his, my tires are very heavy. His stock gear of 3.58 with his new 30" tall tires feels like he has some 3.21 gears. Basically your stock manual truck. If he regears to the 4.10 with is 30" tall tires his gearing will drive like some 3.67 gears. A bit more than stock. If he has the money than go for it but in my opinion it isn't necessary. If you do regear I think 4.10 will be fine, in the end its your call.

    Your truck with your new 29" tires feels so different because of your original high gear set. It feels like you are driving around with a 3.07 gear set. I have a question though why is it easier to regear an auto than a standard? What changes in the rear? I've never heard of this before and have swaped many rear ends with no reguard to the trans.

    You might also give it a couple of tankfuls of gas and see how it drives then. The computer seems to take about that long to adjust to changes.

    its ur truck man do what you want. It all depends on your driving habits too, i have the base 5 lug with 3.31's and when i went to the 235/75/15 i DID notice a difference especially on the highway, so instead of killing my engine i regeared to a 3.73 i got from a prerunner rear end. you may be ok with your 3.58's but like i said its totally up to you, if YOU feel a difference than do what you think is right. With a topic like this it can get out of hand very fast lol, so play with calculators and allow your engine to readjust then go from there. Unfortunatley your spedo is F*ed for life lol, mines off when im at 85 on the speedo im really around 75, just need to remeber that its screwed up.

    thanks for all of the help. I will take this knowledge and do further research and make a decision. I appreciate all of the help! i can feel a difference but im still on my first tank since the tire swap so i will wait and see if it adjusts enough or if i need a regear.

    Thanks for the post but that doesn't make the job harder. Its like anything else you just have to have the correct parts. You have the same issues with certain chevy rears. Especially when you are jumping from a higher gearing to a much lower gearing (3.08 to a 4.10.) The Thickness changes as does the spacing. If you buy the wrong gear then it will certainly be a PITA same as your rear.

    Sorry to bring a dead thread to life but does anyone have information on how a 5-lugger with 235/75r15 tires performs in terms of power and MPG after re-gearing to 3.73?

    From what I've heard, when you put 235/75/15's on it corrects the speedo since the speedo normally reads 2-3 MPH low at 60 MPH. I've heard many people say that they did not need to regear at all. Most people said that after they put the new tires on, their speedo read about 1 MPH higher than their GPS was reading...and there shouldn't be any noticeable loss of power (except maybe on the highway).
