New bike day!!! Just built this and took it out on it's first ride today. Freakin' stoked on it. Perfect bike for it's purpose. Climbs fast, descends way faster than it has any business doing so. Those 2.8s come to life when the suspension and pressure is dialed in.
Also added the subtle camo paint protection wrap from AMS. Love the stuff it's on all the bikes now.IMG_9285.jpgIMG_9286.jpgIMG_9287.jpg

Unfortunately the "anti-roadie" vibe is everywhere. I'll only ride on the road during certain hours and most certainly avoid 3pm-6pm when everyone is heading home from the job they hate, to the house they cant afford, and to the family that... well, i'll just leave it at that. Side note, I've been doing a lot of gravel/road riding on my mtb lately and yeah it's slower, but it sure as hell makes you stronger. Cheers.

Unfortunately I think I am part of the populace as well. I commute into DC with my road bike and its funny how little tolerance I have realized that I have for roadies...but if any sort of MTB guy was in trouble I wouldn't even think twice. I think the community around me are the standard leotard metros that always have an ego to display.

Fwiw I rode a Lefty for years and they're rad. Ultra stiff, definitely unique, and hold value pretty well (Fat bike guys love them).

I was just having this conversation with someone yesterday. If I could do it again I would run 1x10 exclusively. Many people consider 1x10 "obsolete" but the reality is how cheap and readily available parts have now become all because folks have to have the latest technology (including me). I run 1x11 right now and with the amount I ride I find myself going through a cassette and three chains per year ($$$).

I recommend sticking with the simplicity of 1x10, it will make you a stronger rider and you can be riding clearance sale cassettes and cheap chains for years. If your legs aren't quite strong enough for 1x10 just throw a smaller ring up front to compensate (32t is normal, may consider 30t for easier climbing)

What gear range for the cassette do you think I should be looking at? Obviously it's a personal preference. I'm a returning rider who hasn't ridden since I was in college 20 years ago.

I commute 23 miles round trip on my Giant STP SS with 2.3s. Works great actually.

You will want alot of teeth on the biggest ring if you're out of shape. Something like 10-42 (First number is the bottom cog, second number is the largest cog)
But that's exciting you're riding again, trails are amazing nowadays. Many cities have full-time trail builders that are really able to construct pieces of art. No more "IMBA Epic" bullshit rides that are exhausting with no fun.

    You're a beast.

You could run a 30T front with an 11-36 or 11-42 rear and be just fine.

Yeah, I'm a bitch when it comes to climbing. I still get to the top like everyone else though.

That's fair. I'm weird and like to climb. I've ran a 34t for a few years now.

But I switched back to flats recently and can tell a huge difference with climbing. Not sure how long I will last on flats

Just curious, if you are using a tailgate pad to transport the bike, how do you tie it down in the truck bed?

I miss being able to put my bikes in the cab of my F150 without removing the front wheel. That said, I needed to get a rack that holds 4 bikes, fits our Jeep and lets me drop the tailgate with room. Got this Quadratec rack for $150 and it's sturdy as hell. Little long and kills the rear angle, but it's only going to be used for transporting road/hipster/kids bikes. This is my Fuji Track hipster bike I take out for social rides/booze cruises.
