Thanks for your recommendations earlier. I got a set up with the diamond 770 and mounted at the rear with the caliraised mount .Threw some plumbers putty under instead of RTF for now. Hopefully that holds out ok . Now to find a swr meter to make sure all is good .

Hey all, I've got a question or two about antenna mounting. I want to install 2 NMO mounts on the roof of my access cab, one for a GMRS mobile radio and one for a CB (or possibly another type if I get my HAM license in the future).

Any recommendations for locating 2 mounts? I was thinking of marking exact center of the roof then putting one maybe 3" forward of that mark (toward the front bumper) and one 3" behind that mark (toward the rear bumper).

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks everyone!

IC7000 is mounted in cubby. RFI on HF is horrible. I mostly operate 20m CW, when I can hear....

While we are talking resources, anyone have any good links that dives into APRS?

What are the most common uses for those on here who use it on a somewhat regular basis?

Would it matter how close they were to each other if I didn't plan on using both at once? I can't imagine I'd ever be using the two radios simultaneously. I'm using CB and GMRS so freqs are around 27mhz and 465mhz respectively. I thought keeping both antennae closest to the center would be best for ground plane reasons.

    Thanks for the advice!

Here is a link to one of the cooler functions

    http://smsgte.wixsite.com/smsgte/userguide

Lets you send and receive SMS text messages with your radio, including a link to a map of your location. I've played around a bit with it before, but never really used it until my last adventure through the Green Mountains of VT. All three nights camping I had no cell service, but 2 of the three I was able to connect with APRS and send a text to my wife telling her I made it to camp. Its not perfect... the one night camp was so deep in a valley that I couldnt connect to an APRS repeater... but communication 2 out of 3 nights is better then nothing. And if I understand it right, you can actually aprs through satellites if you get your timing right

I cant seem to find supporting data anywhere but www.k0bg.com is a great place to read...

    https://www.electronics-notes.com/articles/ham_radio/amateur-equipment/antenna-hints-tips.php is also good reading

You want the antennas at least 1/4 wavelength apart. Which is basically impossible for CB (2.75m). More distance is better. I don't think 6" is sufficient.

aprs.org has lots of information, but it's not organized very well. I had a tough time wrapping my mind around APRS, and then one day it all clicked.

I send quite a few text messages on it. Mostly with some close friends on 1.25m with my VX-8dr. The groups that support running events use it constantly for their SAG's. Some use it to dispatch the SAG. By setting an object at the location of the SAG pickup.
