Dealership or elsewhere for oil change?

If you don't want to purchase online. You can pickup an OEM filter at the dealer parts department for $6 - $7. They typically also supply you with a new crush washer. This is what I do, but I know the parts counter guy and I get the filters for cost.

 

I'll be the dissenter here. Just got an oil change at my local Toyota dealer. They have an express lane which is dead simple. Drove in, they did quick inspection, oil/filter change in about 20 min., free car wash and out. About $60, taxes in.

I'll do a lot of other work myself, like brakes etc. but for an oil change, its hardly worth the effort to get my ramps and tools out.

 

I’ll pass on free dealer installed swirls in my paint job with the car wash.

Why do you have to get ramps out to change your oil?

 

I just slide under my truck.. Even though its lifted, I still slid under it when it was stock.

 

Wish I had a buck or two for all the people I know that left oil changes to the dealer and had to clean up the leak spots in their driveways. Or pump out the overfilled oil from the crankcase.

 

I use ramps because I drain oil into a 5 gallon bucket. After 3 or 4 changes, I just take to local auto parts and dump it.

 

Anybody know the PN for the crush washers? I'm buying a case of filters soon and I've never replaced the original crush washer.

 

I have an oil pan with a large screw lid ontop and a capped spout on the side. You coukd just tilt it over into the 5 qt container the oil can out of or another container.

 

Nothing wrong with how you’re doing it, but here’s an alternative to the 5 gallon bucket. This will hold about two oil changes worth of fluid. Low profile and easy to transport. Would eliminate the need for ramps too.

Any will work but Toyota filters are pretty cheap and are better than most.

 

Toyota oil filter is good and many have argued its better than most after market ones.

I live in an apartment and am not supposed to change mine. With a fumoto valve I do it in 15 min. No tools needed. Even if the weather stinks it's easy. Saves money for other projects and I know it's done correctly.
