confused about 5100 shocks

are these for lifts or are they for replacing stock shocks?

so if i got these to replace my stock shocks what else would i need if i wanted to lift my truck? Sorry but im a total noob to this stuff. Ive only owned cars before getting my tacoma.

 

You can adjust the 5100's up to 2.5 inches of lift with your stock coils. Some are also running the 5100's at the stock 0 setting with lift coils. So depending on what you want to do, nothing.

 

how much do you want to lift it?

 

the adjustable 5100's have 4 settings of lift (0", 0.85", 1.75", and 2.5") for the front only. for the rear, you would need an add-a-leaf, a block, or a new spring pack.

for the front, the 5100's are all you need to lift. at the 2.5" setting, you may have problems getting a good alignment and you may want to get new upper control arms (UCA's), but most people with the 5100's at 2.5" dont get new UCA's.

 

The 5100's for the front are coilover struts and are adjustable. That is why you can get a lift from them.

The 5100's for the rear, are a standard shock. They are not adjustable and will not lift the rear of the truck.

 

Im looking to lif the truck 3" preferably.

so what would be the best set up for lifting the rear, an add-a-leaf?

 

3 is the max without cutting stuff.
AALs are 2" or 1 1/2".

The rear 5100s will handle the extra 2" lift, stroke wise.

 

So if i wanted a 3" lift should i just buy a suspension kit from pro-comp or something?

 

If you really want the extra 1/2", you could go with an OME (old man emu) setup along with a small top plate spacer. Do a search for it and you'll find what you need.

 

2 1/2" lift is fine, i just want to make sure that i get the best bang for the little money that i have

 

The bilstein 5100's up front and an AAL in the back is your best bet for a good quality, inexpensive lift.

dont get the 5100's for the rear if you're going to lift, they're not any longer than stock.

1.5" lift ~ 8,60 length 5125

2.5+ lift ~ 9,24 length 5125

The 5100's can accommodate up to 2" of lift according to what I've read. There was also a picture around here showing that the billy's are indeed a bit longer than stock . DSM or Toytec posted it.

 

Ive had both the 5100's and 5125's. Lots more travel and articulation with the 5125's. 5100's are not longer, and frequently top out easily. They are 22.5" extended, same as stock.

 

Again, forgive me if i sound ignorant.

If the 5100's are the same length as stock how can they give you any lift? are the 5125's all the way around, the way to go?

 

so 5125 front and back combined with an AAL in the rear? Would this give me a level lift or will it do that Cali lean lift ( higher in the front than the back)
