On aftermarket grills, there are two holes in their version of the garnish. The problem is that these holes throw the sensor off and it no longer works correctly. It gets confused and turns off. One solution is to cut up a license plate holder and covering these holes. My girlfriend happened to have a holder from her Lexus that I cut up. Lots of guys here are taking their front plastic holder and cutting them up (or buying a new one)

Look at my original pic again and here is the original way the aftermarket grill came

Update after a week. The errors have stopped popping up. Probably have driven about 500 miles. I didn't do anything except peck on the black plastic a little.....very technical I know :homer:

But so far so good. Not sure what changed, or if the TSS system perhaps re-calibrates on it's own overtime???

The difference has to be the honeycomb. My sensor is mounted exactly the same behind the oem garnish. Flat plastic is flat plastic, so the only variable is the honeycomb. Unless the shininess of the garnish has some sort of effect.

Sucks we couldn’t make it work like others, but I’m happy now.

I have my scratched up Tupperware behind the honeycomb, taped on, few bolts, and 5000 miles no issues

That grill was meant to be on my truck!

My OEM Pro grill with the TSS garnish plate arrived today and I installed immediately, just couldn't wait. Here are several pics, what a difference the Pro grill makes and...No More Chrome!

Half hour install time and one broken clip.

Can anyone post a link to the 2018 grille? I've searched and every site says "not available." Some sites say you must provide a PRO VIN in order to purchase.

Also, does the new grille come with the "TOYOTA" letters for the grille?

    Thanks

OEM Grill comes with letters already installed. I ordered my grill and garnish off the internet through a Toyota dealer and used a PRO's Vin that was on a local lot in my area. Got everything within a week. The china grills come with letters you have to install. Also the letters say "Toyota" not "Tacoma"

That's a good idea. Can probably just search some dealers and find a PRO for the VIN. Thanks man.

    For those having warnings:

I’m pretty sure that the millimeter wave radar must be completely vertical to work properly. You will notice that you have 2 heavy duty mounting screws and a third screw that is offset. I’m pretty sure that 3rd screw is to adjust tilt.

Put your truck on a flat surface and adjust that 3rd screw until the radar is completely vertical with a level.

    See if that helps.

BEFORE YOU DO THIS - be sure to disconnect the wire to the TSS module which along the Right side bolted support. (Use a small pick or flat head to lift the tab securing the pigtail connection together. Excellent write-up. I'm having a hard time (must be blind) finding the tab on the connector. If possible, can you post a picture. I realize this is really basic, therefore, I must be the village idiot. Thanks!

Not a village idiot. It took me awhile to figure it out as well. Add to that the awkward angle and its definitely hard to see for a first timer. It’s on the flat side, just push down. Sorry no pics to better explain.

Ok so update on my end. I didn't want to say anything to jynx it.

Turned out my last iteration worked! I used a piece of flat black plastic cut to the minimum amount to cover the two grill holes. Two sided taped to the grill. I then mounted the radar with 5 washers to help align it vertically. Driven about 200mi now without an error. Horray!

I have a feeling that the verticality of the sensor is the biggest thing.....but that doesn't explain why just switching garnishes solves it haha.

Happy finally! Anyone have pressing questions on it? Happy to help!

Installed my oem grill and oem garnish yesterday. Went with painted satin black lettering since I am de-badged. So far, no errors with the TSS. This thread was a great help. Thanks to all who contributed to it.

Good to hear. I tried mine in several iterations of verticality, but always had a problem. Maybe I didn’t find the sweet spot. Either way, glad it’s working!

Just made it back from a 2700 mile trip to Moab and the "ghetto garnish" worked flawlessly. I couldn't imagine not having that adaptive cruise control on a long trip like that. It was my first long trip and first time going off-road, stock tacoma held up well.

Nice...what's the ghetto garnish? I'm looking for the 2018 grille now but they seem hard to find without a VIN. Trying to avoid just using a random VIN
