Using rear locking differential?

    I would like to go offroading tomorrow after I get a little target practice in but my truck didn't come with a manual and I don't know how to use the rear locking differential.
    Can someone explain the rules of engagement/disengagement and use to me? Thank you.

    BTW, I apologize for the twin thread...:eek:

    GO SLOW!!! The locking diff is for very low speeds. The lockers are made for EXTREME offroading. Things like rock crawling and silt sand type places. You generally don't need the lockers if you're an average person.

    1. slow or stop
    2. Put it in 2L
    3. push the button and go? That's it?

    yeah... but seriously it's for low speeds. Check out your owner's manual and it will tell you.

    you should call toyota and see if they can get you one. Also wouldn't hurt to call them and ask them about the locker as well... They are expensive trucks so never a bad idea to have all the info.

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    You can be in "D" if you want to.
    You can use the locker at higher speeds, its just listed for 5 mph for liability reasons as the majority of "Joe Public" hasnt driven with a locker before. Many people on TTORA regularly use the locker at speeds much higher than what is listed in the owners manual. Especially on a PreRunner.

    Packerfan, When you are off roading with it, dont worry about the speed. Its more important that you dont use it on the pavement. :)

    Wrong. You can use the locker going as fast as you want, but you should only engage it when stopped or going less than 5MPH.


    This is also wrong. You can use the locker in D, no need to be in a low gear.

    just be forewarned that the truck WILL behave differently with the rear end locked and should be driven with quite a bit of caution until you get the hang of it
