I changed the two map lights to red LED. I doubt there's a video because it is stupid easy but you might have luck searching YouTube.

I changed the map lights to just a white LED and made the dome red and only have the dome come on when the door is opened. I'd ordered a package set of LED's for my BRZ that came with the lights that look like a glass fuse that were supposed to go in the sun visor mirrors, my BRZ doesn't have them so I put them in the mirror lights on the Tacoma, they're insanely bright for their size.

I've also done LED turn signals and reverse lights. On any vehicle I've had I at least change the interior and the reverse lights to LEDs.

I used a thin pocket knife with the tip covered in painters tape to get the lens off. Stick the blade inbehind the lens on the rounded corner that is on the side opposite the hinge the lens pivots on and pop it off. I think I started on the outside rear corner on both sides. There may be a little indention in the lens where you're supposed to pop it off but I can't remember.

The dome I definitely remember that there is a little indention where you're supposed to insert something to pop it off.

mine had the LED map lights when I first got it but for me the LEDs are too stark, I switched it back to the cooler regular bulbs but I realize I'm in the minority on this one.

Dave B thanks for the instructions on getting to the map lights. I just put those in. I bought a 10 pack LED's. What other lights are the same peanut shaped size?

Yup. Most of the white LEDs are to bright. Useless really if you are trying to use the light at night while driving.

I added leds to inside roof light and removed them right off.
Felt like a display inside when they were on.

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
Map and dome, also license plate lights. Here's the video for the map lights. https://youtu.be/SNxu2_p5NkQ Buy the dome carefully if you buy from eBay. There are many different sizes sold "for Tacoma", but only one length fits.

changed the stock super dim dome light out to two warm white 12 SMD LED panels

    Something like this

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/4x-Warm-Wh...544658?hash=item43d7653b92:g:ltgAAOSwBahU~W5h

Then put 2 layers of wax paper in the stock domelight lens to diffuse the light. Its nice and bright now, and blasts light all over the cab when the doors are open which is what i want, but being warm white and diffused is not hard on the eyes.

Map lights have been left stock as they are the perfect dimness and warmth for use for a quick light while driving.

Sorry for the late reply, I typically only get online once a week or so.

The dome in this case is Diode Dynamics SMD12 board. The board has an adhesive strip on the back and I have the board attached to the edge of the housing where the light goes. Kind of hard to explain but you'll see when you remove the cover.

The board has two wires and a connector that use a supplied adapter to connect to the festoon bulb clips in the dome light location. Keep in mind the adapter wires are just pushed into the festoon adapter. One of mine came out and I just had to stick it back in and squeeze the adapter end to make contact. They should solder these, but it is what it is and it works pretty good.

The board is pretty bright, but if it seems like too much hassle, they do have direct drop in festoon replacements in red. One of the drop ins does advertise more lumens but it is 360 degree illumination, the board directs the light directly down. I put the drop in type in my girlfriends Forester and didn't think they were as bright for that reason.

I like having red for the dome, its really easy on your eyes at night. If I need more light I can turn on the blinders I have in the map lights. I did the same thing in my Ram and wouldn't have it any other way.

    Hey thanks for the reply!

I think I understand the Board light and see what it looks like on their webpage.

This would be a first time for me (adding a LED) so I’m just wondering how to decide if the drop in vs the board type will be bright enough? I suppose for the $5 I could buy both and just decide.

Do the LED (Which ever type) cause any problems with the trucks computer? Throw codes?

Also wondering if the LEDs crest a heat issue?

    Thanks for your insight!

I've never had an issue with interior lights on the Tacoma no codes or anything. Keep in mind it is a diode and current only flows through a diode in one direction, so if it doesn't work, flip it over and change polarity.

LED's generate no heat at all compared to an incandescent type bulb.

Like at home, a bulb that produces the same equivalent lumens as a 60 watt bulb only really consumes about 9 watts of real power. There was a bulb that was in my parents garage that I put a screw in LED that was the equivalent lumens of an 800 watt bulb, but it consumes 60 watts as it was advertised. You can't make eye contact with it... it's a blinder, but it's cool to the touch. I've replaced all the incandescent bulbs at home with them, it cuts down on your power bill and your air conditioner doesn't have to cool the building from the heat they put off either!

Along with nearly every bulb in on the interior I also switched the reverse lights to LED...cheap, easy and a big improvement of the old incandescent bulbs.

I’ve only done my dome/map lights and would definitely recommend it. The old incandescents would get so hot after being on a few minutes that you could fry an egg on them if you wanted.

I will say though, whichever ones I bought don’t seem to be quite as bright/illuminate the cab as well but it’s a minor inconvenience.
