SO! I've been wanting to place the shocks on my '97 tacoma. It's 2WD 5 Lug. But the more I look into it the more confused it get...:annoyed: I was looking online at some Monroe 171352L & 171352R for the front. BUTTT when I start looking at the actual truck...they look like dis...(See Photos below) so I don't know what the heck I need...

I'd like to replace the shocks and spring because it looks like the truck slants down to the drivers side. but question time!
    1. would I need an entire strut assembly?
    2. would I need a compression tool and do the shocks and spring separate?
    3. would I have to take the entire front suspension apart to get to the spring?
    4. How on earth do I do this...

    Thanks ya'll!

I would buy the entire strut and spring assembly just so you don't have to compress the spring. Monroe makes the whole assemblies you can buy.

5lug trucks dont come as one assembly.

You can remove the shock easily its only 2 bolts on the bottom and 1 nut on top and they just slide out the bottom.

To get the coils out your gunna have to disconnect a fair bit so the lca will sag down enough and then use a spring compressor to get it out

You can jut change the shocks in like 10min but that wont help with the sag if the coils are shot, changing the coils will take alot long.

6lug parts WILL NOT FIT on your truck, you must order 5lug coils and shocks

Here are part numbers for the coils
    Moog 81070
    Acdelco 45h0356
Here are part numbers for shocks
    Fcs 341513
    Monroe 32292
    Bilsten 24184991

All these parts should fit your truck, really its up to you for brand preference on what you want to buy.

So I imagine that you would have to get your front end aligned after replaced both the shocks and coils?

You shouldn't need an alignment afterwards. I have an 03 2rz and Spwerrunner is right on when hesaid 5 lug ONLY parts. When i did mine it took about an hour per side. PA winters and rusty bottom bolts. The bottom end of the shock has 2 ears that the bolts go through, and they are angled to align with the holes. That took the longest. I used a second smaller jack to help get the bottom of the shock into place. Buy a Haynes manual for info and,as always, safety first.Good luck and keep us posted.

Its always recommend to get an alignment after doing any work on your suspension. It may not feel like you need one but it doesn’t hurt anything if you get one

Sperrunner: You wouldn't happen to have correct part numbers for a 2nd Gen? 2006 TRD Sport 4x 6M DCSB

I have a Frame and Rear Leaf Recall coming next week and I am considering Monroe. My local shop gave me this:
    FRT STRUT 171371 L/R
    REAR SHOCK 37280

I like the Toyota OEM (Bilstein) set up, but don't like the dealer cost for parts. But I can supply my own parts to them to reinstall.

I mostly daily drive and ocassionally Tow a 24' sailboat dual axel tailer (4-5K lbs all up)

    Thanks!

You can buy bilstein 4600 (which are oem hight) or 5100 which can be set to oem hight up front or provide lift and the rear is long enough that if you wanted you can add a AAL.
The monroe part number the deal gave you are correct
Oem bilstein part is rear #48530-a9680 front #48510-09u61

It depends on how saggy your old springs were. If the new ones add any appreciable amount of height, your camber will change. To be on the safe side, I would recommend getting an alignment.

Looks to me like somebody put a torch to the bottom of your springs to heat them up and lower the front end. In your photos, the bottom 2 coils look to be touching each other, effectively removing one of the coils from the assembly. I'd get another pair of springs if it were my truck.

His coils may be a little worn out but thats how 5lug coils are. Because they mount flat
