What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

If you're willing to spend a little extra than what 5100s/Nitros cost, you can get a pair of rear Icon 2.0 shocks for $300. And they'll be rebuildable. For a couple hundred more you can get them with reservoirs but it's not necessary if you don't push your truck too hard.

I got them with resi's from Headstrong for $520 but I remember seeing them for $300 for just the shocks. I've been really happy with mine, they perform much better than the 5100s I had on previously.

 

Add light bar up top, don't forget that too.

Let's hear some critique, what'd make it better. I have a prerunner so that's why I went with that bumper, but I could make an ARB or other plate bumper style.

 

Hey Ethan, Why would I want a shirt of a floating truck from 1970? People want suspension, wheels tires, correct windshield etc... Give them a reason to buy it... brands, prestige "1st gen owners club, Tacoma Built not bought club etc... Its pitiful

 

My first post said, what do you think so far, That was my bad, should've mentioned there will be long travel on the one side and oem on the other.

 

I'll remove the B and C pillar uprights and the tube under the windshield. I'll remove the base plates tilt it like you did and weld the entire top. I'll basically weld the cage from top to bottom. Worse case I can stick weld it.

 

I have been struggling a bit with figuring out what tire pressures I want to run on my new tires. The STT Pros are e-rated and are a lot different from what I was used to.

Out of the block, I put them to 35 psi which was less than what I used to run on the KM2s that Zane is running around on now. Those were perfect (to me) at 40. The new Coopers felt like rolling rocks at 35 tho. So after a few miles I lowered them to 32. A little better but still pretty stiff and seemed harsh compared to what I was used to. And unfortunately, I was getting terrible MPGs (13-14).

Well maybe it was because they were new and they might break in. Took a trip to Montana at 32 psi and on highway the ride wasn't too bad but those MPGs were killing me. Then, first time off-road with them, aired down to 20. Hoping this would help with the sidewall stiffness over all. I think one of the reasons the KM2s were so mushy was the large number of aired down miles they had on them. Well 20 on the STT Pros was not nearly enough and ended up lowering them again down to 16 psi and it helped a lot. They felt much better and I may even try them out a little lower next time.

To the present, I am on a small road trip to visit my sister, all highway. Pushed the pressure up to 42 psi. Surprisingly, the ride seemed reasonable. Or maybe I'm just getting used to the "e"s. The really good news is that at 42, the MPGs improved to 16.2 for the tank.

For the trip home tomorrow, I raised the PSIs again. Up to 47 now. Curious to see what that does to the MPGs.

 

i have a rattle/chirping sound coming from the truck. no idea on where it is im at a lost. just changed a u-joint and carrier bearing thinking that was the problem. it happens when i accelerate but stops at 30-35mph. i have had the truck worked on timing belt replaced along with alot of other work. new radiator cv axles upper plenum gasket. kinda sounds like the drive shaft pinging? but theres no slope or vibration at all. everything is tight that should be. any ideas on what it could be?

 

At some point you’re going to start wearing the center faster than the sides if the tire is overinflated. Gonna be a trade off between comfort, mileage, and even treadwear I think.

I agree, I’ll run a trail at 12 psi all day long. Especially with E’s, that didn’t seem too low, hell they barely bulged out.

 

I run my KO2s (E) at 15 psi and get told all the time "dude you know you need to air down right?" by others on the trail...they don't show hardly any sidewall flex at all unless they're positioned on a rock or something.

You can definitely tell the difference though in the cab...hitting the staging area with them at 38 psi feels like I'm hitting sidewalk curbs until I air them down.

 

I run 35 on the street and 12-15 off road. I have 305 70 16 STT PRO

Oh man, lol. Your life is about to change. The ride quality is a night/day difference when you air down, especially if you're running a heavy E rated tire. Not too mention you get much better traction on the harder stuff.

Only thing that sucks about it is the time it takes to air down and back up...but a good compressor will help with that.
