This 2016 Tacoma 6 speed is the third Tacoma I have owned. My previous trucks had the 4.0l and lots of torque at rpm's of 1800 to 2000. This 3.5l sucks in this range and I have to shift down. PITA driving in Colorado mountains. Anyone super charge or turbo these motors?

The 3.5L is a high rev engine, get the RPMs up, it’ll rip

    https://youtu.be/ORB-5rV7MRk

With some slight modifications like a hood scoop and intake you can do this!

Well shit, disregard that post. It did seem a little fast for a V6. I do like how they kept the factory tail lights and badges.

OV tune helps a lot. The owner is developing a turbo kit as well.

The 3.5 has a “bigger sack” than you are led to believe. Give the ECU 2,000+ miles to learn and watch your smile grow...constantly.

EDIT: 2016 truck. Was the battery changed recently?

I have no problems with the engine torque living at 7000' and having the automatic.

    Be more specific.

The way this reads, you are driving in the mountains at cruise speeds? So in the 1800-2000 range, around what, 70?

And you hit a grade and have to downshift to prevent lugging the engine and maintain speed?

If I have that right, seems like an automatic would be good for you. It's what they do. Automatically.

I hit city highway merging speeds in 3rd gear. What issues are you having OP?

    Stock 3rd gen V6 M/T is at ~2500 rpm at 70..

1800 to 2000 on stock tune at altitude on a steep grade (in 6th) - yeah, I can see a downshift. 5th only gives you about 500rpm more.

OVtune will help with throttle response and fattens out the torque curve 2000 ~3500. How much you will benefit from that will definitely be affected by thinner air though.

Still way cheaper than a re-gear/FI kit as a first try.

No issues and driving in mountains. Was just at Quandary Peak last weekend.

    The old 4.0 generates about 200 ft-lbs at 2000 rpms. The 3.5 generates about.....wait for it....200 ft-lbs at 2000 rmps...

    Nope.

Although the factory calibration changed twice before the 18's came along.

ECU version 04B10 (what my tune is based on), 04B11, and lastly 04B12.

No TSBs for driveability or whatnot like the A/T has :notsure:

I'm sure the majority of M/T folks are happy with the way their trucks drive, but for anyone else there is no Toyota solution besides getting rid of your ride (or living with it).

    Meh, to each their own.
