For those wondering if you can do oil changes at the intervals Toyota suggest

Lack of oil being 1 quart or less.

It's tough to run an engine on oil if it only calls for 3.5-4 quarts in the first place. You burn 3 quarts of that in 10K miles you are endangering the very internals within it.

Lol, a modern day engine? The internal combustion engine has been around for over 100 years. The only thing that has changed in it is the tighter tolerances, and the emissions components designed to make it run "cleaner" in attempts to obtain better gas mileage by the ARB and CAFE.

The reason why some of these engines are burning through oil is because these manufacturers are using lightweight, low tension piston rings which as a byproduct allows oil burning. Again, in attempts to obtain the most milk from the cow (fuel economy due to reduction in parasitic drag or friction in the combustion chamber) Nissan is a prime candidate for this issue. Toyota Corolla. Dodge Multi-air series I mean take your pick. Nothing is sacred anymore and all of these manufacturers are sharing engine and transmission designs with each other. Honda is no longer just Honda and Chevy is no longer just Chevy.

The modern day vehicle is designed with a planned life expectancy of that of a modern day household appliance (around 7-10 years).. if that is not telling of the quality of materials and pride of craftsmanship (or lack thereof) in these vehicles I don't know what is.

The old saying of they just don't make 'em like they used anymore to is very applicable here. Fact of the matter is that most people just hop in their cars and just take off, never thinking twice about checking their oil until it's time for a change. If that.

Anywho, my messages are clearly falling on some deaf ears here. The only message I am trying to deliver in my first post (which you guys' are obviously misconstruing) is: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Check your damn oil levels before the 10K changes.

The manufacturers take the R&D plans drawn up by the engineers and get to making it happen from there. It's a maintenance war, of course Hyundai is going to up the mileage on their oil changes, because they have to compete with Toyota who just went 15,000 miles on their oil changes. Otherwise you and John Doe won't want to but Hyundai products. I can already forsee these mfg's eventually switching out to "lifetime oil" no oil change required. Similar to how they have done with these transmissions. You trust these engineers? These are the same guys who put starters under intake manifold assemblies, and put oil filters right beneath the exhaust manifolds for the world to burn themselves on during something which should be a simple oil change. They don't give a hell about the longevity of an engine or a tranny, as long as it makes it past 5 years or 60K miles maybe even less depending on the warranty. If you have worked on the various makes and models throught the years, you have witnessed the evolution of horrible designs over the generations of vehicles released and lack of superior material usage, pride in craftsmanship. I know I have definitely seen the declination in all of the above stated.

Anyways, I'm headed back to my Supercharger section. Good day sirs.

Did I ever state I was a Toyota exclusive technician? No.

I'm sorry but I don't believe any of that as burning oil pollutes a fuck load more hence you can smell and often see if someone is.
I'm 90% sure emissions standards would not accept this either and with all the cars I've owned I've never had one that burns oil the way you claim.

I'm not dismissing the fact you should check your oil regularly but the way you're claiming it makes me think you're one of those old guys that thinks because your 1970s car burned oil that every modern vehicle burns oil, when that shit would never pass emissions standards.

Or that you're just a bitter tech who's tired of having idiots ignore their oil changes and come in with a broken engine.

Dood, I'm an old guy...with a 2006 RAV4 4cyl awd...it burns oil, ever since new as described by the poster you are quoting. Even with full synth it's had all its life. You can't see it, can't smell it but the fvcker inhales oil. Now, my Tacoma doesn't exhibit that behaviour in the slightest.

Not for a moment woudl I even think about pushing the rav beyond 8k kms on full synth, it'd be too low on oil. Just my experience

Hell my old cheap piece of shit boss broke his 2012 vw Touareg by going 67 000km before doing an oil change and then his engine finally seized like you say in which he got another shady shop to forge oil change receipt to get vw to warranty his engine. His reasoning was new engines are efficient and don't need oil changed a lot.

But if a vw can go almost 70k km before burning through all it's oil I find it hard to believe a 2016+ Toyota engine is burning through as much oil as you claim it is in 10 000 miles. @12TRDTacoma

Maybe it's just some burn and some don't .My parents 09 Forester does burn a little dunno if it did new as they bought it used but regardless check your oil definitely.
I check mine and guess what in the 14 000km I did before change its level never changed.

But for the Forester it's small to by the 10 000km change for it it will have moved maybe 1/4 down the dip stick from full.

Oh my... there is so much wrong in your post. Reply if you want the actual facts on the way things work in engineering, otherwise, just keep posting fiction lol. Have a great weekend!

It don't  I check my oil weekly as I put between 2K and 3K miles on it a month. I drove the 5th Gen 4Runners for over 200K and now this 3.5. Neither used any oil. But... I still check it weekly just in case.

I drive about 2500 miles in two weeks while working. I check the oil every third fill up. Topping off if needed. It’s good to check the oil windshield washer look at hoses and belts and any signs of trouble with anything, battery terminals etc. fluid leaks where they should not be. Every 800-1000 miles is due diligence.

Aint nothing wrong with being diligent about maintenance. My issues start when people say that toyota is wrong and you need to change the oil at 5,000 or less no matter how pedestrian your driving style is. When pressed for facts about why they say ????? and puke a bunch of info that is more relevant to their grandpappy's '39 Packard than my Tacoma.

Yeah, I let my 2010 fj go to 1 year or 10k. Whichever came first And I wheeled occasionally in the San Juan’s. And never worried about it.
My current Tacoma gets 5k mile oil change intervals every other month with a heavier grade. But I am driving it in Hell. (West Texas oil fields) Mostly unimproved caliche roads, with tons of dust kicked up by heavy traffic and well above 100 everyday. my severe duty is not imaginary. All of my rubber parts hoses and belts have a permanent limestone coating.

I'll say it again, if in 10k miles your motor burns through all your oil, there is a bigger problem that needs to be solved. If my truck burns all it's oil, I hope it does it soon, another 3K before the 20K mile oil change is due. And I haven't pulled the dip stick out once. I'll do it after my free (included I purchase price) oil changes are over.

Or a $35k midsize under sprung truck either. But they do anyway.

If you need an appliance vehicle (and many do) Hyundai has some good choices.

And when you work that TCO #, they are at least on par with Toyota and Honda.
