I decided to do the spark plugs on my uncles 2016 Tacoma. Repair manual says to remove the intake manifold to replaced the drivers side spark plugs, I was able to replace them without removing the intake. Hope this helps out some people.

These are the tools I used. Torque wrench, 3/8 drive ratchet and extensions, 1/4 ratchet and extensions, picks, screwdriver, flashlight, spark plug socket, and pliers
    [IMG]
Air intake removed. Maf connector and other hoses removed.
Disconnect electrical connectors from coils and High pressure fuel pump and removed spark plugs. Torque spec to spark plugs is 18NM or 13 ftlbf. Torque to coils is 10 NM or 7 ft lbf.
Now on the drivers side there are 2 bars that bolt onto the intake and the engine.
Now remove 4 12mm bolts from both bars. Take both fuel lines out of their hold downs, (DO NOT BEND OR KINK THESE LINES!). Remove the 10mm bolt from the sound insulation and remove insulation. removed the 10mm bolts from the ignition coils. To remove the coils you have to rotate the coils in a certain ways to clear the intake.
Reinstall everything in reverse. Make sure to plug in all the connectors and reinstall all the hoses that were disconnected.

The places circled in yellow are where the hoses are to disconnected, fuel lines hold down clips removed and intake to engine bracket bolts.

Excellent! This is going to save a lot of fuckery, the kind you get if you follow the SM and remove the air tank.

One question, regarding that stupid cover over the coil next to the firewall (driver's side) - one 10mm bolt?

    This guy?

It took me close to an 1-1.5 hours. It was my first time working on this engine so I took my time. Majority of the time was spent figuring out what to take off to access the spark plugs. If I had to do it again, it would take around 30 minutes.
