I need to ask a favor of the group. Can you guys positively identify the transmission pictured? I'm looking for a W-56 and saw this one for very cheap $50.00. A master rebuild kit for a W-56 at Marlin is $299.00 so i could have essentially a new trans for under $400.00.

no, I dont believe it is, looks to be a G series trans (either G52, G54, G58) as the W56 trans had 6 bolt shifter plates for both the forward and top shift Tcases. the first photo shows what a topshift Tcase W56 looks like and the 2nd shows what a forward shift Tcase W56 looks like. but all W56s have a 6 bolt base plate

actually @GuyHuey, I take that back; that looks to be the better R150F or the R151F Turbo transmission. you can tell by the bellhousing and the front trans housing (the body in front of where the shifters are at) that it is NOT a G or W series. The G and W series have more lines on the bell housing and the R series matches up more to that trans than all the others do. first photo is the R150F and the 2nd is R151F Turbo...I dont know the exact differences....but they look extremely alike

Thanks Alfuh, if he still has it i'm going to pick it up. For 50 bucks I really don't have anything to lose.

I looked a little more thanks to the direction you afforded. I think it's an R150f. The 151 apparently has about a 4 inch hole in the passenger side front of the bellhousing that is filled with a rubber gromet. The one I'm looking at doesnt have that.

If this is the R150. which it seems to be here's the gear ratios and other specs:

    R150F 1988-91 3.830 2.062 1.436 1.000 0.838 4.220 Chain 23-spline Top

23 spline is good, not sure if the Chain driven transfer case is desirable though.

tbh, it looks like an RF1A gear driven tcase, i know these trans were on the early 3.slows and the 22rte iirc. mostly because I thought the chain driven cases were all driver side drops to account for IFS instead of pass side drops for solid axles. i could be wrong though, but that tcase looks a lot like the gear driven one

it may be a chain, especially if it was bolted to the V6. its hard to tell from the photo, but you can determine by looking at the back cover of the transfer case. 7 bolts for gear and 5 for the chain. i guess all the pickups had pass side drops, even for IFS...which im not too sure on

Wyatt at RST swears by the chain driven stuff. He has a stock fj case in his on 41” iroks and has a lot of gear.

The case in my 4Runner is chain and it hasn't let me down yet. I wonder if the doubler part is the same as the gear cases. If so you could use the double for the front on twin cases.

We'll see if the dude that has it messages me back, so far he hasn't replied.
