    There was a guy on here from the Caribbean (I think) that had a turbo'ed 3.4l making an insane amount of boost. He destroyed his stock flexplate one day while going WOT and said it just demolished everything in it's path when it exploded and nearly came out the floor board. I'll see if I can find his build thread, he describes it in there

    edit: meant to say flywheel, it was a manual trans. All this flywheel/flexplate talk has me confused now lol.

    So... nothing specific for you, but these conversations always make me chuckle. The chance that you're 17.8 was due to the tire pressure difference IMO is relatively low, given that the pressures weren't all that different (at those levels). And, I'm assuming that 17.8 was from the SG for either a tank or for the return trip.

    Here are things I think likely played a bigger role:
    • On the trip out (east) we were driving from sea level to ~6000' in elevation. That's over a mile of "net up" that you had to push a heavy truck. Conversely, you had the benefit of a net 6000' drop on the way west (home).
    • The return trip was slightly slower (and really, slightly - like in the 2-4mph range) - but, given that wind resistance increases by a power of three as speed increases, it's a pretty large effect.
    • The weather on the return trip was significantly better. As I recall, headed out, you hit golf-ball sized hail and slippery roads. Not good for mileage.
    • Who knows what the headwind situation was, either trip - but as we know, that could make 100% of the difference in itself.
    • Who knows exactly when a given gas pump "clicked off" or how much topping off you did of a given tank. (this would be negated slightly if the 17.8 was the entire return trip)
    Anyway, I'm not saying that the tire pressure couldn't have played a role - it surely did. But not 10% - that's very unlikely.

    I will be very interested to see what your average mileage over the next 3000-6000 miles is (for me, that's about the point where I feel like the introduced errors work themselves out - it's "over the course of an oil change" :)), and it'd be very interesting to see if tire pressures affected that.

    There's a reason people making real power on big V8s and such use QuickTime bell housings that are almost bombproof, those flywheels and flexplates can go right through your legs.

    Also should go by GPS distances and gas pump fill amounts as the SG and UG estimates for MPG are wildly inaccurate.

    There was a guy on here who wanted to mate a Chevy 350 to the original W59 5-speed that came with his 2RZ. I don’t think that 5-speed would last very long.

    Mini truck guys from well before the Taco used to bolt 350s and 4.3s to W series transmissions and they hold up fine. It's not what I would do, but for low impact stuff like crawling and daily driving they're more than fine

    The roof line is still much to square for a 1st gen taco IMO, and too tall. Looks good otherwise!

    I've looked. The closest thing I've found is a ladder rack. Otherwise, you'll have to do custom.

    You asked about what tire for a tread pattern, I think the BFG KR3 would make a visually good looking tread pattern and lots of folks don't know about them. Or maybe duratrac, that's pretty agressive looking if nothing else haha.

    Yeah, I was thinking BFG AT and upon further inspection just about every tread is different on that tire, very little copy and paste action would be going on there. It was the stock tire and everyone can recognize the pattern, but I think that ones out the window lol

    No, it truly is an apples to apples comparison. You can chuckle all you want but don't discount it so quickly/easily. The only real substantive change was the tire pressure. I am a bit confused by your weather comment tho. The weather was awesome this past weekend, certainly no hail was encountered.

    Both directions were an identical route. Yes there was elevation gain and loss. It was not a climb up to elevation then a return trip of coming back down. It was up over passes and then down the over side to reach the destination.

    Truck weighed the same both directions (minus a little beer weight).

    Speeds were virtually identical both ways as traffic conditions in the various segments were very similar. There was a slight headwind I noticed on the return trip (at sea level) but was only slight and would only has worsend the MPGs on the return segment.

    Calculations were backed up by the SC but were done with simple math from fill ups. The same odometer was used in both calculations. Granted, one variable might be the gas pumps themselves but if we start arguing about those, it really is a hopeless discussion.

    Of course, you may be correct, this information may be meaningless. After all, the tires did wear down a bit during the trip over. That will throw off the calculations for the return trip. :rolleyes:

    i think his point is that a 1mpg difference over just one tank is not enough evidence to prove your tire pressure really made an impact.
