the prerunners and 4x4s had the cable across the axle. 2wd 5 lugs had them into the drum

They're getting cheap now that the market is well saturated, bet you could a get a decent one around 8 grand now. But I agree with the above comments as well, it handles well, like really well, but subaru power plant and very little actual power despite being light doesn't make my fizzy bits fizz as clarkson would put it. I'm strange so I'd really love to see someone put a 3VZ-FE in with a turbo, mountain road with high 300s for HP so you could rocket out of a turn with the turbos spooled up. That is all that car needs to fix all of my gripes with it, toyota turbo v6. Your 3rd gen has the engine it should have had, minus a turbo.

D4s isn't the issue, one is a baby subaru engine that can't even measure up to its old predecessors but still has all of the subaru "quirks". The other is a car engine (that would be perfect in the FRS) that someone decided a truck really needed so they could write a higher HP figure and tout a pointless Atkinson cycle function that unfortunately also blows out boost. The dual injection system however has awesome potential for power.... if either merited the work. But no instead both are hopelessly N/A. The 2GR-FSE/FKS could be just what the FRS/BRZ/86 really need, it is light and has a powerband for a little car and even N/A would be enough power for it. The FA or whatever designation Toyota gives it is just a slap in face with D4S bolted on.

How do you like your third gen? Having all those shifting problems everyone complains about or are most third genners just bitchers?

Helped tear out a 4.0l tonight. Took the two of us about 3.5 hours with a dinner break in the middle of it.

Haha that’s all he needs I’m sure. It’s got a blown head gasket, so just a fix and throw it back in. I guess it’s common on the 05-06s.
That’s good to hear. I’d hate to see the tacomas going downhill. I’d like to test drive one and see how it did. Especially with a load behind it.

    Who's done drum brakes before?

The drum brakes on my truck are fine, but my buddy with the '94 Grand Cherokee has had this terrible squealing noise coming from the rear whenever you hit the brakes. I believe the drum brakes are original to the car, there is no record of them ever being replaced.

Would worn brake shoes be causing that squealing? Or maybe it's a spring or something as a part of the drum assembly?

Originally I thought it was a seized caliper, but they appear fine and replacing the rotors or pads didn't do anything.

All drums are a little different when it comes to how all the springs go in. Just get yourself a drum brake servicing toolkit cause the springs are annoying though, just put the right shoes on the right sides longer on the back shorter in the front. The shoes can squeal but usually theyre rusty or something

I had a feeling it's some seized springs maybe. Could be rust too.

Like my truck, the Jeep has never been off-road so I don't think there's any debris or anything in there. Who knows - I'll tell him to order up some new hardware, shoes, and drums and replace them.

This happens as well but it isn't a sustained squeal it only happens from the pedal push and release

The squeal comes whenever the brake is pushed past a certain threshold - the squeal gets louder. You hear it mostly when coming to a stop light or a stop sign, or coming to an abrupt stop.

I found a kinda helpful photo of the spots to lube (not a jeep, just a picture of drum breaks) but like @Speedytech7 said the springs might be bad or parts have rusted inside.

My drums on the taco squeak a fair bit and so do the calipers. I really need to put all new brakes on it again. But half of it is getting done soon because I am swapping the rear axle to a full float cruiser (disc brakes with drum parking brake) axle like what I have under my 80 series.

What kind of lube should I be using? Just general grease, or brake lube, or maybe anti-seize or something?

I would pull the drum and if everything looks fine just lube it, if that doesn’t help you have a different problem

I think they make “drum break lube” idk how that differs from normal break lube though
