How to Use the Tow Hook

This seems like such a dumb question, I thought it would already be answered somewhere else, but after an extensive search online, I have yet to find any specific directions on how to attach a tow strap or snatch strap to the tow hook that comes on TRD OR and Pro vehicles.

I realize the tow hook is not specifically designed to be a "recovery point", but I have heard that it can be used as such, assuming you are not stuck too badly. Regardless of whether it is being used for a recovery or just towing, I have not seen any guidance on how to safely secure a tow or snatch strap to the hook, such that it will not slip off.

I have attached a photo of one that another user (PEIyota) had posted previously for reference. It seems to me that one would put the loop of a strap over the big hook, and I guess hope that the barbs on the end of the hook are sufficient to prevent the strap loop from slipping off. That seems a bit sketchy to me in either a towing or recovery situation. The little hook on the back seems like it is there for a reason, but one I cannot figure out what that is. Is there a way to use the little hook on the back to secure the strap to the big hook to keep it from slipping off? Do you run a piece of wire around the little hook and barbs on the big hook, to keep the strap from coming off while in use?

 

According to the manual, the little back hook is a tie-down point for use if being towed on a flatbed.

 

I wouldnt use anything to keep it from slipping thats not meant for that exact purpose or you will/could snap ur line and seriously hurt someone. I just read an article where hooks are more superior that d shackles cause its one less missle to fly through the air. So throw line over it and snatch away. Remember always to wrap when ur gonna do a snatch

Do you mean hoop? A hook is still a chunk of metal, and at least with a d ring it can only come off if it breaks.
