I've used them just never inspected the underside of the lid. Eegads I cringe at the thought of all the widgets under there that have gone neglected, unnoticed and unused!

Do you need to know, or care?
It's one of those things they put in that make you ask "what's this for?". Like that cubby hole to the left of the steering wheel that makes you ask "what's the purpose of this?". It's the intrigue of the vehicle that sells it. Those marketing guys are geniuses!

It took a little modification, but not too bad. I first cut half of the pen holder. I cut two stripes of square dial rod (purchased at Home Depot) to build up the slope. Screwed a piece of sheet metal into the wooden blocks. This size Grid-it still interferes with the hinge, so I notched the inside console lid.
Finally I used heavy duty 3m double stick tape to attach the Grid-it to the sheet metal.

Does anyone's key actually stay put in this? Mine falls out usually immediately after closing the lid. And I don't have a .50 cal :/ I guess maybe some pixie sticks?

Well, good news is, you don't need a 50. 77grains of freedom is widely available in a 5.56.

isn't the ignition key & tailgate key the same? maybe a stupid question but mine are the one and the same...not sure I would stick and extra key in there...

For those of us that splurged a little (or a lot) on creature comforts, we don't even have an ignition 'key'. Pushbutton start and whatnot.

I’ve been thinking about that one. Mounting a Serpa holster for a P220. Mine digs into the seat when I wear it while I’m driving, And I have a couple Serpas that don’t see much use anymore.
