I remember using cork on my old Chevy. Rubber was so much better once I was finally able to find some. So there is no significant difference in “Toyota’s neoprene” vs other neoprene? I’m looking at this set. https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/351605039787

 

It looks fine. However i don't have it in my hand to see if it's harder rubber than stock or as pliable. It's Japanese made and complete with cam plugs so odds are it's fine. You can bet Toyota doesn't make the new OEM ones. They're getting them somewhere.

and the fact that it's not 9 dollars and 99 cents is a good sign it's not just some chinese knock off that the package is tougher than the product.

To answer your earlier question, no Toyota doesn't own a patent on quality neoprene. Like I had mentioned, FelPro's is a quality set.

I kind of like the guaranty of using local parts houses that i can return to if either they do fail or i just plain don't like them.
I do however use Ebay stuff, especially if doing a favor for someone who i KNOW isn't going to keep up with receipts or isn't keeping the vehicle for 'life'.
Most times it's either a great deal on OEM knock offs (like your choice) or having no guarantee by buying local.

Im really needing to do this job soon as well, does anyone know of a oem style kit containing all the parts needed? I'd rather go with oem gaskets etc. if i decide to tackle the job.

 

I have not been able to find a completely OEM kit, myself. However, the kit that is listed in the products section at the bottom does seem like good quality. I haven't purchased it yet, so I cannot guarantee anything. When I'm ready to do this job, it will most likely be the kit I go with. Unless someone tells me before hand that it is total crap.

Did this back in June, was seeping a bunch of oil and @235k it was time. Got the kit off Amazon here:

Amazon says it doesn't fit my Taco, but from the questions and reviews I figured it did (it fits the 5vz just fine). Comes with the cam plugs, washers, spark gaskets and pcv grommet. Used gray RTV from autozone, and took the opportunity to replace the spark cables and re-gap the plugs (new-ish, but a few were off a bit) and swap sides. Reused the half-moons and intake gaskets (though the gaskets are showing some wear, rubber flaking in places and even separating). Everything came out fine, even took a wire brush to what I could to shine it up a bit. Think I missed a cable somewhere though, the temp gauge on the cluster is stuck below C even after driving a bit. My ODB reader sees the correct temp. so I'm not too worried, and it looks to be one thats under and behind everything (of course). Pic Dirty vs clean covers:

 

Looking good. I just did the same, took the engine degreaser and wire brush to the covers as well. I got all oem stuff, job wasn’t too bad. Did have a high idle issue but turned out to be a dirty IAC. Guess I washed some extra carbon down in there. Cleaned it out and it purrs like a kitten.

 

If your doing the valve cover gaskets you have a good chance of breaking the wire harness plastic heat shield. The plastic is 20 years old and brittle and a good chance
that it will need to be repaired. You can not buy just the heat shield from Toyota,
you have to buy the complete wire harness for 2000.00 plus dollars. Haha right.

1) Tesa harness tape for the wiring harness is
what I recommend as it’s rated at 300 degrees!

2) Napa wire loom metal and rubber brackets can be used for those with the broken heat shield tabs to secure the harness in place to the engine.
3) 6 feet or so of heat resistant wire loom tubing
