I was set on getting a reg cab 2nd gen before I found my 04, love the look and feel of the short wheelbase reg cab Tacomas. Although looking back I'm glad it didn't go that way, its hard enough with the limited space of an xtra cab most times.

Yeah the xtra cab is the nicest looking tacoma, i dont like the short bed of the double cab, and a regular cab isn’t real practical.
But something about a short wheel base tacoma seems really cool as a crawler.

Short wheelbase ftw. One guy I wheel with out here has a long bed 3rd gen, built really well and will crawl over most anything except for a dirt mound tall enough to high center him lol. Then out comes the recovery strap.

If i wanted a 3rd gen to daily drive like @m3bassman it woulf be a double cab long bed.
But if i make a trail rig kinda want a reg cab 1st gen or even better a reg cab 85 or older pickup

I wouldn’t really want a manual in a DD. Unless the auto is really that bad?

What year reg cab? New trail rig? Or 5lug mini truck?

I've been commuting daily in Los Angeles with a manual trans for nearly 15 years. Some of those in the heart of the city. Never have I wished I had an auto instead. Although I will say that with my 1st gen I'm glad I'm out toward the suburbs now. Clutch is a bit more work than it was on my Scion previously.

Try bay area traffic in a manual....
And ive never Drove a Durango but my dads dakota is actually really nice to drive, the auto tranny is a little slow to react when you give it gas but its like that in every auto ive drove. It also gets better mpg then me and he has a v8...

Never thought id say this but bay area traffic is just as bad as LA also why I got rid of my manual transmission.

Yeah the 1st gen clutch is kinda heavy, made worse when you have a performance clutch like me...

And speaking of reg cabs look at this beauty.

That's a long bed though? Or maybe it's the camera angle. Nice truck regardless

Been there in LA. Took 4 hours to go 1/4 mile to my exit cause of a semi crash. Even the side of the highway was backed up from people trying to sneak by, but the trailers covered the whole span of the highway. But ive also had the same thing happen to me going eastbound on the bay bridge. I love driving manuals. Is way more fun, but in city traffic it sucks.

That looks like an early 80s or late 70s model no? Either way solid axle would be awesome. No ball joint nightmares or CV axle headaches. Just back pain from a rough ride lol.

For your commute I'd be all over my bike, then truck in the winter.

No, literally neither of those are true. That durango was made at the height of Mopar awfulness and isn't in the least bit trust worthy. 4cyl mini and reliability are on point. Even my wheeling truck gets better MPG than that Durango, and 4cyl carb'd or EFI toyota still gonna be better MPG around town.

I meant mini as in a 1st gen 5lug with the 2.4. The manual is suppose to get like 22mpg
