Want to change speakers & add a Amp on my 2009 Double Cab Tacoma

    Hello everyone
    This is my first post on this site so thank you in advance for all your help.

    Ok here is what I am wondering:

    First: does any one know how much depth there is in the doors where the speakers are mounted.

    Here is what I am looking to do. Install the Dynaudio 3 way set in the front doors and and a Dynaudio 2 way set in the rear doors.

    Has anyone installed Dynaudio in there Tacoma's?

    Second:

    Need Sugestion on where to best place the amplifier that I want to install. I have not settled on which amp I will go with but I am think about either using a Zapco DC360.4 or a Alpine Alpine PDX4.100. I am currently leaning towards the Alpine since it is very small amp compared to the Zapco amp but I know the Zapco amp is a better amp.

    Third: Does any one know if the factory toyota ipod adapter works with the iphone 3G?

    Welcome killerken! You sound like my kind of guy asking about Dynaudios :D. I used them in my last competition system (got a couple of trophies with that one :)), will use them in my upcoming competition system and I'm also building a system for another member here that will use them. :) I make plenty of baffles for these trucks and know there is plenty of room in the doors for them to fit however I'm not sure about getting a 3-way set in the doors. Have you considered kick panels with the mid/tweet there and the midbass in the door? If you want to keep the stock locations a 2 way set up there would be most impressive as well IMO. Also, were you planning to add a sub or 2?
    As far as the amp you cannot beat the Zapco DC for it's quality and processing abilities IMO however the Alpine would work well if space is a concern. What year/model truck do you have? edit: scratch that as I see you have an 09 double cab in the title of your thread :eek: so there are all kinds of options available to you if you don't mind giving up the room behind your rear seats. :)

    I agree these are the best speakers out there. Nothing can compete. I have a three way set in my ford escape. 8" mid bass in the doors and I made some custom fiberglass enclosures for the mid and tweeter in the kick panels. I was thinking about doing the same thing again because this is how I can get the best imaging but I really want to keep this system a stealth looking as possible. I don't think I am going to do a sub in this truck but I never know what I am going to do this time.

    Where are you mounting your amps?

    So no problem with 8" mid bass in the doors that is good. In my escape I had to space out the window track.

    Is there enough room to mount the alpine Amp under the seats on these trucks?

    If you have some pictures of your Dynoaudio install in this truck I would love to see them.

    I forgot to mention my install was not in one of these trucks! I'll agree that kickpanels will give you the best imaging however as mentioned they may take away from the "stock" look. You could consider the Q-Forms which actually blend quite well in these trucks IMO (that's what I used in my competition system with a bit of modification). In any case I have made baffles for a few guys to fit the MW170/172 however there is a slight bit of trimming required (I'm using the MW162 in the other members truck since he is using a sub). There is another member here that is using the Dynaudio tweeters with DLS dome mids in some custom door pods he built but I don't know how "stock" they will look once installed (I'll see if I can find the pictures). Also, the Alpine amp will easily fit under the seat and you'll have enough room under the other seat for all the crossovers.

    Hey Marv,

    I still havent finished these yet (as I've been working on relocating my hazard/clock to the lower cubby, and installing my Audio Control three.1 in its place), but these are the pics I took last. Again, the finished face-plate will fit nicely, and wil be covered with the same carbon-fiber material that my X-SP was from the port. Superior Dash out of Daytona Beach is the company that provides the dash kits to Southeast Toyota. The pics dont do them justice, Ill take better ones after their mounted.

    There are others that have done similar style pods, although I went a litle further my building mine almost solid. I found a nice tutorial somewhere on TN (after mine were almost complete:() , Ill look later and see if I can find it.

    I built mine a little differently, but its basically the same thing. I wish I would have found this link earlier, as I might have used his "technique" and saved alot of fab-time...

    There are other articles available on Google, which were helpful when building mine.

    I wasnt as concerned about keeping the factory look as I was being able to eventually return the interior to stock condition. I got a great deal on another set of door panels and rear storage compartments(ebay), which I wrapped up and stored away. When I trade in the truck, I can return it to stock.

    I think that if I am going to do that I am going to do kick panels so I can achieve good imaging.

    I will agree with Marv on this point.....YOU ARE MY KIND OF GUY AS WELL!

    If you are willing to do all the modifications to get a 3 way in there, lets back up a sencond and see if keeping it simple might work too. K.I.S.S. I am personally NOT a fan of 3 way systems. Too many modifications (normally) and all kinds of phase issues and processing power to make them sound thier best. I personally run a 2 way set in my competition car and am VERY happy with it. Let me tell you the plans I had (and may still do) to my Taco. ID Ultra mini horns and the XS69 midbass...I currently run the midbass and tweet set already and the mini horns will indeed fit with the relocation of the e-brake. Now with that, if your willing to do all the mods to do a 3way, simply relocating or eliminating the e-brake sure sounds alot easier to me. As for rear speakers, eliminate them...there is no need. I would be more than happy to discuss it on the phone if you want to pm me. I do like your taste though. :)

    Horns, now we are going back in the day. I ran horns back when USD first introduced them. I have also used ID horns also. I use to run horns modified with a different driver that I got from Parts Expres to give me a better frequency range and I paired them with 8" orion mid base drivers.

    As far as now is concerned I am not looking to remove the emergency break system so horns will not work but bey good sugestion. Horns do provide great imaging.

    I have to decide how much money I would like to spend plus see what my friend is willing to do for me on pricing of Dynaudio Speakers.

    Here is my current ideas:

    Option #1

    Install a three way set up front and a two way set in the back. If I do this then I will put the mid and the tweet in a custom kick panel and the 8" mid bass in the door. In the back I will use the two way set.

    Option #2

    Install a two way set in the front and rear doors

    Option #3
    If I cannot get a good price on the Dynaudio's find the next best thing probably JL Audio or Alpine. I am not a fan of Boston Acoustics. If this is the case then it will be a two way set in each door.

    Question since you mentioned ID have you ever heard there two way set?

    The Key is I am looking for excellent sound quality and excellent imaging. I also listen to metal and rock so I like speakers that have great response and strong range capacity.

    It took along time to align the speaker baffles so the speakers where aimed properly, and I believe with some RTA tuning will be able to achieve the sound Im looking for.

    I have a set of Q-forms kick-panels, as I originally planned on installing my mids & tweets in the kick, with the woofer in the door.

    I decided to go with the pods as I prefer the speakers closer together. Its easier to tune IMO, and everything blends better. Too much separation can sometimes lead to time-alignment issues etc. Just depends on your taste, as everyone is different.

    I also use my dead-pedal while driving, and didnt want to loose it for the kick.

    At 1 time, Marv and I were discussing the possibility of a baffle that could house the woofer & mid in the stock door location. Minor cutting of the door sheet metal would be required, but nothing severe. I liked the idea of everything hidden, but that left the tweeter up high in the stock location, which was too much separation for me.

    For the rear-fill, I have some Morel 6.5" coaxial (bi-ampable), as I didnt want to cut tweeter holes in the rear.

    Many people dont like rear-fill, but i had the extra 2-channels available on my 2nd Tru amp, and with the volume control knob on the three.1, adjustments can be made easily. They are nice to have with passengers, or at the drive-in, and I have no intentions on ever competing, so why not...lol... If I dont like them, a simple turn of an in-dash knob will silence them.

    If you can get the Dyna's, thats the way to go. If you do decide to go another direction, dont rule-out DLS... They are the next best to thing (IMO), and might save you some $.

    Yes I currently run the XS69 set in my Taco and run the midbass in my competition car.....that mean I like them..ALOT. Talk to Marv on Dynaudio, he gets some damn nice prices on those. One thing I would mention though isthe XS69 which is a 6x9 set gives you the same cone area of an 8" and because of the dispersion pattern can give you awesome imaging. Who would have thought that 6x9's would be back in full force, ID recommends the 6x9 to anyone who can fit them because of those two reasons. Matter of fact the new demo car they are building is using them with 600wrms on each midbass :eek: (I run 300wrms on each midbass and they love it)

    See the one reason why I love kick panels is that they are easy to correct the time alignement.

    What I do is when I build the kick panels i use a laser measuring tool to measure the distance from the dome light to the mid on both the passenger side and the drivers side and then do the same with the tweeters after they are both the same I glue the speasker ring in place and then stretch speaker cloth to complete the kick panels.

    I am going to have to start really looking at my options.

    If your interested, I have a set of Zapco Reference (high dynamic) 6.5" comp set for sale. They seriously sound outstanding I ran them before I put the Image gear in. Retail if $859 im selling them for $250. Even Marv will praise the tweeter on this set.

    I used this stuff to mount my speakers. It's called dibond It is like two sheets of really thick aluminum foil, with plastic squeezed between. works perfect for this application, you'd be able to find scraps at most sign shops. I like to keep everything looking nice and as stock as possible.

    That I will! :) BTW, if you want to get the best possible performance from your new speakers you need a dense baffle material to absorb the energy of the mid as well as deadening of any resonance from the door.
