Thinking of buying SSP to go along with my OVTune. Does anyone know if the 'custom tune' form will be capable of changing the shift points similar to how SSP does? I'm just going to wait for the OVTune updates to move along if that's the case.

SSP is a waste of money if you get this tune. @OVTune can do all of what SSP does within the ECU and so it’s not needed at all. I know he has mentioned this in this thread somewhere.

OP states the new development includes driver demand tables based on vehicle speed, which SOUNDS like it could achieve similar results to an SSP if you wanted that. With a couple of exceptions that don't surface often, I love the way the truck shifts overall right now. If I were using SSP I'd be in 3rd/4th all the time around town b/c that's where the "power band" is. With the tune I find I can actually drive around hitting the OD gears without losing my mind which, along with other changes in timing/AFR/atkinson has led to a remarkable increase in MPGs.

I mean I'm getting 20mpgs in congested, hilly city driving on an OR with 400 lbs of bolt ons, often with 500lbs of passengers! Yesterday I caught myself in some traffic so there was a lot of stop and then "floor it" to go. I was certain I'd see a trip MPG that was low as many times as I laid on the throttle from a stop weaving in and out of traffic. 19.5 MPGs

I didn't get the tune for MPGs but if I can be in 5th and 6th where it makes sense and know I can predictably downshift to 4/3 when I need the juice without hesitation. The other thing I'd caution (with the current version of the tune) is that S-mode has full lock engaged more which would change how the truck drives a bit if you were using it for everyday driving.

I have the tune, as of right now it's not a waste of money to get SSP until OVTune is capable of not shifting into 5th gear at 40mph. Currently it doesn't do what SSP does, my question is will it in the future? Is that part of the 'Custom Tune' upgrade?

You did a great job of explaining it. I had an SSP and sold it when 1.02 came out a while back.

I understand what you're saying, I just respectfully disagree. I'm not ok with the truck shifting to 5th gear at 40mph. Everyone is different, it makes the world go around, and it's exactly why the custom tune is being created. My understanding of the driver demand tables is shifting based on pedal input, which is great, but I'd never shift my truck into 5th gear at 40mph if I had a manual and I don't want the auto to do it either.

I can confirm, tune negates the "effects" of the SSP, as well as things such as the Sprint Booster. Those products are simply Band-Aids over the actual problem, they attack one symtpom of the poor ecu tuning many of these trucks were delivered with but each product ignores all the other causes. SSP may help with transmission up/down shifting, but it won't change the fact that for it's displacement and the relative gold mine of tech going on in this motor it didn't make a lot of power with what's there... And the Sprint Booster doesn't really do anything it just feels like it does. I really thought it did something at first and I'll be the first to admit it, but alas it doesn't, the tune does haha

You're right, everyone is different. I'm in 5th in my M/T (and sometimes 6th) at 40 for a good part of my daily commute. Truck does it just fine tuned. That said, M/T 4.30 axles and lower overdrive gears play a big part in that too if we're comparing to the auto.

I also have a general rule of never being below 2k rpm. Preferably not below 22-23. Just how i drive.

Lol hey man, I know my lower mpg is due in part to how I drive. And I'm perfectly okay with it

Yeah man, just messin around lol.

I didn't say it was particularly fun to drive my Taco like that, but it will do it no problem (91 octane file).

That said, I'm regularly letting it eat in 3rd on highway on-ramps. Oops, there goes that trip average!

70 mph in 6th (2500+ rpm) is where this thing likes to live on the highway. Any pressure on the throttle and the speedo starts windin' lol. mpg will suck doing that, but meh.

Starting last night, my truck has been asking me to "press the start/stop button with the remote to start the engine" because it does not start with the key in the car anymore and the feature that locks and unlocks the door just by touching the door handle isn't working. The remote lock/unlock/alarm works fine and the light blinks red when pressed. I am doubtful it's related to the tune just an unusual coincidence and I'm going to try my spare remote tonight when I'm back home from work and maybe throw a new battery in the remote.
