Also, unless you want to pay 100 in fines, don't drive anywhere near dunes.

    FYI....

OSV permits are issued for a year from the month of purchase. The permit fee ranges from $70 to $150, depending upon the type of access desired. All vehicles using the OSV zone must display a valid OSV Permit. Upon signing the registration for the OSV permit, operators accept responsibility for knowing and following all OSV regulations. Please see the OSV brochure for complete regulations.

OSV operators in designated zone must carry the following equipment:
    - A shovel with a blade at least 6" square and at least 18" long.
    - A vehicle jack sufficient to lift one wheel clear of the sand.
    - A jack support that is at least 12"x12" of non-bending steel, 5/8" plywood or 1½" hardwood.
    - A tire gauge with a minimum reading of 15 pounds or less.
    - A tow rope or tow strap, chain or cable with a minimum pulling strength of 6,000 pounds and at least 10 feet long. Minimum diameter is ½" for nylon or Dacron ropes; ¾" for all other ropes; ¼" for carbon steel cable; 5/16" for chain links.

Isn’t camping by reservation? That’s what I found when I was researching it. You can’t just camp on the beach.

Ok so here's the skinny. The VA side is pretty much closed. So you'll have to buy the "Day Use" to drive on the MD side which is $90. The only way you can camp on the beach is buying the "Bullpen" pass and you have to have a camper in the bed with a self contained bathroom system. RTTs and Gatorade bottles aren't acceptable. Part if MD is still open but it's partially closed down because of the endangered stupid bird (Piped Plover) that makes it's nest on the ground (Wonder why it's endangered...") You can camp in the MD side park, or Chincoteague at Toms Cove.

I'm a local so if y'all need any info, feel free to ask.

Thanks man that's the gist of what I read as well. So all those camp spots along the beach are reserved already? How is camping at the side park, Chincoteague and Toms? Do they allow dogs at toms or Chincoteague I thought I read no animals even in the truck on VA side that's lame?

No animals is only in the VA side refuge. Toms on Chincoteague is outside the refuge and it's nothing special.

So the MD side does have beach side camping but they are generally reserved on all the weekends through the summer as soon as they open them up for reservation in March.

Pets are allowed on the MD side, but not really at a lot of campsites. You'll have to call the Ranger station on the MD side to find out though. They also have to be on leashes no longer than 6' at all times.

Yeah just called and everything is booked on weekends forever............................................

Looks like Thursday july 11th there are 3 spots open right next to each other for 3 trucks and 2 more spots in close proximity if anyone wanted to do that route?

November - march spots are first come first serve but the weather wont be as warm but that actually is fine with me as I'm from the northwest and used to chilling by the ocean regardless of weather.

Any recommended decent campgrounds/koas or cool hotels close by if we just did a beach day and got a room or cabin?

I honestly havent doneuch local camping. KOA is supposedly nice, and as you mentioned Tom's Cove is nothing special.

You can pay for an overnight fishing pass and camp on the beach but you have to be "actively" fishing. Meaning, someone awake and a rod in the water.

Oh snap didn't even think of that. Good call. Yeah I typically get a free night or two at almost all campgrounds.
