Don't they make them pilotless now? Seems silly to have a pilot light running continuously off of a small tank supply.

When the unit senses any water pressure, it ignites the heater... so I guess you are right there isn't necessarily a constant pilot.

You can dramatically improve adhesion by giving the surface some "tooth", thoroughly roughening the surface with very coarse sandpaper then use plastic specific paint. A smooth finish isn't the goal here anyway.

These are posted in the groupbuy forums and a good product. I have two of them.

Can they ONLY be pressurized with a hose?

Are you asking if a pump could be used?

Just throwing this out here in the wind, and letting the dust settle it - another low cost air pressurized water tank option may be one of these; a food grade reverse osmosis pressure tank:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is_s?k=pressure+storage+tank

The 4-gallon one may be a good choice: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Q798N8E/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527526004&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=pressure+storage+tank&psc=1&th=1

Keep in mind with these though, you need to use a water pump (like a 12v RV water pump) or house hose, not an air pump, to pressurize it. The air chamber is a balloon and expands while the water gets pushed out.

no you can run a pump as well. I thought about doing that as well. there's some pretty affordable pumps from web you can use as well.

Anyone have insight into this? Yes - it does take a lot of space but for 16 gallons it seems to be a legit option for long haul trips. Stumbled across a Jeep forum and a guy modified this to have a standard hose sprayer on it.

If that would be a viable option for someone not wanting to pay 199 for a puny 3 gallon waterport

Another option would just be some sort of resevoir. And a cordless or 12volt pressure pump hooked up to the outlet and a sprayer. Could potentially make it as big or small as you want.

I made something very similar to yours, two something's to be specific, and so far after over a year using at least one of them regularly I can say they work awesome. For anyone going through the trouble of building a custom tank like these go as big as possible. Mine are 8-9 gallons each and I wish I had more.

It isn't metal and I don't see those exact dimensions, but this place could build something if anyone can.

Get whatever size you want!! The price on these is great. I would check to see if the tanks are food grade..

    https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_...prefix=northstar+s,aps,217&crid=2BFXU20UEA33T

Probably ok but still good to check if you want to drink the H2O.

I got the waterport. I don't need that much capacity. Just enough to water the dog after running in the heat and the waterport sure beats hauling around jugs - just for convenience.

Just took a quick look at their website. I can't find the height of tank that I'm looking for, so I'd probably have to get a quote on a custom one....wonder how much that would cost to set up the tooling and build a new one. They have a form to fill out, but I might call them first to see what the ballpark price is.
