I've been trying to figure out how to get a larger inverter. I'd like to run my table saw. I'm guessing 400w won't cut it.

I was considering upgrading the OEM unit, but it sounds like it's really integrated, with a breaker built into the button. So I was considering installling a second one, and putting the outlet on the driver side bed compartment, directly across from the OEM outlet.

A larger inverter takes some serious DC electrical considerations as well. Started doing the math on DC current, and the mental excercise started to fall apart. Probably easier just to bring a Genny. Lol.

Well a lot of table saws are like 15 amps....so running on 110V would be 1650 Watts. Gonna need a heck of an invertor to get that.

I tried using a small 110V tree saw on mine and it ran, but there just wasn't enough juice. A table saw would probably push it, too. I have a 1000W inverter generator, the kind you use for tailgating, and that thing even had trouble running a shop fan and 7.5" circular saw. Just too much draw on it. I'm thinking this 1000W inverter will be enough to run my 8 gal. compressor. That would probably be the biggest draw on it.

The nice thing about this model is it plugs into the 12V plugs in the dash so no significant wiring needed. Just run it under the floor mat.

Even if you had like a 2000W invertor...the truck wont sustain voltage to supply it....I bet at idle, with nothing else on, you might get 800W available from a stock alternator.

I'm mounting a 2300 Watt inverter, but also have added more batteries. I have a 200AH, 75AH, and 55AH batteries. The stock alternator only puts out 130 amps, less when at idle. The alternator takes 2 AWG wires. LOL. So 50' of that and the lugs weren't cheap. Hoping to install soon, maybe this weekend.

I think the big thing is enough capacity to run for short duration, and just watch your stuff to not drain the system.

I thought the Off Road HD alternators were enough to run a 1200 or 1500 watt inverter? This is just what I was told so I have not researched yet.

Correction.. The 12V from the dash caps out at 120W.

Good point. Most of the accessory ports are thin wires and aren't designed for big stuff. My Snomaster fridge came with a 12V plug, but it got hard wired and hooked with 10AWG all the way. For a 1000 Watt inverter, and 15 feet or so of wire to get there, 1000Watts/12 volts~83 Amps, call it 85 amps. When I use the wire calculator, it suggested 4AWG wire. Basically, welding cable. Lol. And you'll want an extra wire for the grounding of 8AWG or so. It's beefy, but should be good.

I think the big thing for me and inverters is the ability to have power somewhere I wouldn't normally and large enough that if my area lost power for a few days, I could use the system to keep my home fridge alive.

You can plug in a 1500W invertor all day long as many do. However most dont use all that wattage. Maybe 200 here, 600 there.

I was basing that off a conservative half-of-what the alternator can put out max....so 130A alternator is probably only 1300W available MAX. Gotta run the truck too.

My table saw is a small portable one. Still, I was aiming at a 15 amp outlet, and came up with needing a 2000w inverter. After doing the DC voltage math and wire sizing, the project was a no go.

I wouldn't need continuous duty for a long duration. A few seconds to rip some boards. It would require a hefty battery bank, and then allow the OEM (or aftermarket) alternator to recover the battery bank.

It's cheaper, easier, and more versatile to just buy a Honda e2000, to accomplish my goals. The inverter is a luxury I can live without.
