Just zip tie the brake lines as high up in the fender well as you can, like to the UCA or something. Hardly anything will drip out, that's what I did when I swapped out my Napa calipers.

Does anyone know if I can mount a 285/75r16 tire on the stock 2003 steel spare?

 

You can, but I wouldn't mount that size on any wheel narrower that 7.5"s

 

I have. Its actually quite easy.

Drill out the spot welds and remove bed panel. The hardest part is around the tail gate/bed transition.I drilled new holes in the new panel and plug welded and flap wheeled the weld flat.

 

To what extent of welding are we talking about?

 

Is the stock steelie 16x7 or 7.5?

 

Stock spare steelie is 16x7 for '01-04; 15x7 for '95-00

 

Sounds like they are to narrow for 285/75r16s

 

Very minimal. The plug welds are on the inside of the top of the bed rails and the others are located between the tail gate pocket and the tail light housing and I think there was 1 inside the tial light housing.

Your MIG welder will do the job perfectly.

Plug welding is just pulling the trigger on the MIG gun to fill in the hole. Grind flat, prime and paint.

If the light is right you should be able to see the factory spot welds that need to be drilled out.

 

I ran 295s on the stock wheels for quite a while with zero issue.

In fact, the narrow wheel is better for holding the bead while aired down.

 

He lives in CA there's no reason to buy a jacked up bed. I had to have a bed shipped to me from western Washington because my old bed had a small rot hole

 

Went on a morning bike ride after dropping off the Tacoma for an alignment and there were two Jeep guys practically jerking eachother off at the gas station over their matching angry eye grilles and 22inch wheels with 33s

 

I'd be afraid squatters would set up camp under there.

 

It's a chevy so the squatter lives inside the cab

New brake calipers installed today under warranty, new brake fluid as well. Everything is good to go back up and running
