how much is 35-40k a year?

I received an email from a cousin, she said Dallas School district needs international teachers that spoke english and have a university degree, apparently they offer around 35-40k a year and a 3 year work visa with the option to a full resident visa..

im wondering if 35-40k a year is a good wage?

 

Depends on how high cost of living is in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area is. I'm sure some of the Texas guys will be able to answer that question.

 

Not sure about Dallas, but it would be really hard to live on that in SoCal.

 

Same with the DC suburbs.

 

Your take home prolly be around $700-$800.

 

Probably not in Dallas....it's a decent wage where I live but cost of living is cheap. I couldn't live on that here though I have child support and a toy fetish!

 

there are 2080hours in a work year (52*40). so take 35000/2080=16.83/hour. Of course, this doesn't count all the holidays you get, spring break, christmas, thanksgiving, etc. time off you get. Also, in the dallas area, that's not a horrible salary either. depends on your quality of life and what you consider is "good".

 

Also, I had heard that since teachers work for the state they don't have to pay taxes till the end of the year, but I am not sure.

 

Truthfully, it all depends on your living style. Dallas is a reasonable place to live as compared to either coast. It is very comparable with KC as far as housing. No state taxes which is a bonus. As a teacher you could get a summer job as well...

It is about $770 per week before taxes...not sure how taxes work on a visa though.

 

It's not that great, but depends on how expensive your taste is on the non-essentials (truck stuff etc)

That sounds like a decent starting salary. Many school districts have built in steps and salary increases and it's likely that the salary grows substantially over time.

 

I work for the state and they don't take social security from my pay which means I don't get to collect when I retire. I work at a school also and I'm in union. I believe you would have to pay union dues as well.

 

I doubt there are many unions in TX. Down south unions aren't as common as the North. 35k-40k isn't bad. Thats about the same as starting teacher salaries here in GA. From what I understand the cost of living isn't too bad in Dallas. Very comparable to GA and the cost of living in GA is low. It always amazes me why anyone would live in a place where a 1,500 sq ft house costs $300k+.

 

I made $43k last year...So I live good, New truck mustang, Apt. it ain't bad if your good with $$

 

LOL yeah.....every time I go down to the south to visit relatives........I get a little when it comes to comparing houses.

 

all interesting, i need to check on the application costs and all that stuff though....

 

same here......but.....south carolina does have one of the cheaper cost of living deals outta anywhere else.
