Vagabond Drifter Camper Buildout and Mods

hmm, how are you guys waterproofing the hole made in the side of the drifter from the L track's? Using rv sealant?

 

That is how I’m doing it. I’ve used rtv silicone in my roof rack holes and it’s lasted for nearly 3 years of hard wheeling. It works wonders!

 

Good to know. I've never had good luck with it which is why I ask. I'll have to give it a another try.

 

You have to use more. A lot more.

 

hmm, could you not just place an oring btw the track and drifter, an o-ring behind the head of the bolt?

 

I sandwiched the camper wall the same way I did the awnings: alum flat bar on the inside, closed cell foam on both sides, and marine sealant from West Marine. You can kind of see it here:

I did this in my Flippac for winter camping and it worked good. I carpeted both sides which helped with condensation. A little harder to do on the road tho

was thinking if you used another airline track on the inside you could have a place to mount stuff inside too. like dish towels, swim trunks, back scratcher, you know, the essentials.

 

That's kind of my plan I think it would be worth while for sure! I wanna say Jon did something similar in his old FP and Phil's V1

 

Your build out looks awesome. Do you have any more photos of the interior?

 

The wall mounted propane tank is a neat touch, really like that

Thanks man, it’s works pretty good. Ideally it would be on a swing out rear bumper but who knows when that will happen.

Both these photos are a little older. I don’t pack the table any more because I made a swing out table inside. Happy to share more if ya guys want.

The set up has worked well for us. I plan to keep it nearly identical in the drifter with a few modifications my wife and I came up with

Where did you get that cargo net?

 

Believe those are called fruit hammocks and ae available at most chandeliers (aka marina hardware store), sure west marine sells something like it though. BE warned though, the hammock tends to mark fruit, etc if kept in it for an extended period of time.

 

That’s a good idea. Although I’m actually getting the inside walls insulated, so not sure how that will interfere.

 

Depends on the type of insulation you plan to use. You'll notice the amount of heat if it's facing the sun, or the cold if it's freezing. But insulation in general will probably come in one of 3 forms:

1. Aluminum or Plastic Composite Panel filled with foam
2. HDPE Foam
3. Bubble wrapped mylar Reflectix

This is how I would approach it.

1. Use foam or composite panel that will be the same thickness as the L Track
2. Cut a slot for the L Track
3. Put carpet over the entire panel and L-Track
4. Cut a flap for the L Track
5. Profit

With the carpet covering the L-Track, you should be pretty g2g in terms of heat or cold but also retain some options to hang junk off the side or put away the mounts to keep it tidy. Another positive is you'll have a great spot to put some patches.

If you want to go super advanced, get some stainless sheet metal and put it between the carpet and the insulation. Now you'll have a little something to magnetic mount some stuff like a paper towel holder or flashlight.
