What powers factory X subwoofer in access cab?

Does this subwoofer have its own amplifier? If so, has anyone upgraded the amp to it either by replacing it in its location or adding a separate one? How much power can this subwoofer handle? What is its size? Has anyone replaced the subwoofer in it with something better that will fit and still look factory?

 

I was curious if I could change the speaker in it also. The amp is built into the speaker its the silver box in the center.

 

Wow, thanks arcenik! That's the only pic I've seen of this "sub" taken apart and measured. I wonder if you could just ditch the metal bracket that speaker is on and just screw an aftermarket speaker onto the stock enclosure. Do you know the screw hole measurements? Like distance from one another? Looks like a 6.5" subwooder should have holes that could match. Also what is the maximum depth and magnet width of a subwoofer that could fit this enclosure.

I've been scared to take it apart so I dont break anything. I've yet to see a detailed DIY of taking this out and apart. It looks like you could swap in a better speaker, I just want to know the specs. Like ohms (guessing its 4 ohms) and frequency range, RMS and max watts or if the amp has some kind of low pass filter. Also would be nice if someone made a harness that simply could plugs into an aftermarket amp that could be swapped in place where the stock one is.

 

These are the only photos I took when I had it apart. I was thinking to just ditch the amp and get a better sub for it. But then I thought it might be better to just build another box in the same spot. Let me know if you find something that fits in its place.

 

Also it’s hard to see in the photo but it’s not just a single speaker it’s like two speakers back to back hard to explained but you can kind of see it in the photos

 

Well, that's weird, that doesn't make sense to me. Wonder what the reasoning of that is. So they're wired in parallel? So basically, I can double the mounting depth of one of those speakers and get a rough estimate of one aftermarket subwoofer than can replace those two, like 5.5 inch mounting depth. It shouldn't matter if its single coil or dual voice coil?

I've seen a few options to put in there, but I've been out of the aftermarket subwoofer game for a while so don't know who makes a good sub for the value. The JL one I can probably find locally and test fit tomorrow but is it really worth that much more than some of these other ones? From most expensive to cheapest:

No the speaker you see is the only one. But if you look good it has a cone facing the front and back. You can see the back one if you zoom in on the first photo. There is only one set of wires running to the speaker also.

 

Ok I got you now. So it looks like I will have to find a pretty shallow 6.5 subwoofer (~3") in order for it to fit.

 

IIRC there was room behind the speaker I did not measure though. You would need to take it apart to see what fits depth wise.

 

That's one speaker and one passive radiator.

Its basically a speaker without a coil or magnet. You'd be better off building a real box and ditching that plastic mess.

Any real sub you mount in there wouldn't be sealed properly and would also vibrate the hell out of that.

 

Did you end up changing out the speaker? Or did you ditch it for a whole new subwoofer. I want to replace that sub but I don't know how to wire the remote wire. I guess I could use a Line out Converter but I don't really want to splice those factory wires.

I have found a few speakers that reach the desired frequencies to act like a sub but I have not bought one yet. I do plan on doing something with the plastic enclosure to make it more dense. Probably cutting out the plastic in front of the speaker, and then fiberglassing the entire inside it to give it more structure. Debating whether to fill voids with foam and then fiberglassing on top of it. I got to see if a low pass filter is needed or if the factory already does that.

I have my stock sub out of the car right now and taken apart. How do you remove the little sub/speaker itself I am having some troubles.

I ended up replacing mine with a jl stealth box for a 2016. It fits perfectly.

 

So does this thing have an amp that is wired into the factory harness or what? Replacing the factory unit with a single din kit and wondering if there's anything i should be aware of here.

 

As a musician thats deef, the JL stealth box with JL 600w amp, stock head and stock speakers in a 2020 access cab is quite sufficient for me. Got boom if I want it or not. The installer also put in a "volume" knob for the amp, I love it! I had to wait several weeks but it is worth every penny. Box is not cumbersome at all!!

 

I bought a JL audio stealth box for my 2020 access trd 4x4 off road and a 600w JL audio amp which is under the drivers seat. I used all the stock speakers and head unit. The box sits between the rear seats and looks totally stock. It cost 1400 but I think it was worth it!
