I already had recurring lower back problems before I started. The only time it would be an issue in training was from hip throws (throwing and being thrown) or if someone had my back and I was contorted in a certain way. I did get sciatica but it was only a problem when standing in place like in the shower or waiting in line somewhere. As for quitting, it wasn't a big deal to me.

Trained for over 20 years in various martial arts/mma/karate/judo, Bando & Kungfu, promoted to 4th Dan Master Belt in Tangsoodo in 2009 and received 5th Dan in 2014. Owned and operated my own Dojang (Full Armor Karate) with my son who I promoted to 4th Dan in 2012 for 5 years in the Pittsburgh Pa area then moved to SC in 2016 then Wilmington NC area 6 months ago, thought about opening one again but a lot of work and overhead.

That’s how my top coach is. He’s to the point where his body won’t allow him to roll anymore. His body has just been hammered.

Yeah I was kinda overdue. We had promotions several months back but I was only able to attend the last 10minutes as an observer because of work so I missed that one but I caught back up with a surprise 2 strip promotion this time so that was cool.

Not at all odd to me. It's the same thing I am going through now, can't use my weights or do punching drills on my bag at home due to a pinched nerve. That's your release.

What’s up fellas. So I think it’s times for me to get in to BJJ. I live in Costa Mesa (Orange County) can anyone recommend a good gym not too far from me?

What will I be looking at cost wise? I know I can google and search and I’ll do that. Figure I’d drop a line here.

    Respect

I’m unfamiliar with gyms up in your area. But it’s my understanding that the general cost for membership per month can be anywhere from 100-150. I’m currently paying 110 and that’s all the classes and weights you can handle.

Aside from that, I think I can speak for every practitioner when I say that starting BJJ will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. It’s quite a remarkable art in more areas than one. My perception of life and my mental development and problem solving have changed drastically. It’s pretty wild. Hope you find a gym that suits you and you can start training. Best of luck on your journey.

Not sure how far Santa Monica is from you, but Dynamix is a great place. Henry Aikins is a great guy and a really great instructor.

Santa Monica is a tad far for me. Tons of gyms of all styles around me, looks like yelp will be my friend and I’ll keep asking around. Thanks guys

Ya man you are really luck as far as your location. There are tons of school down there. See if you can "try out" a few places for a week or two and find one that fits your wants/needs/ personality.

Most gyms allow you to sign a waiver and train a couple days free of charge to get a feel for the gym and the guys who train there. I think that’s pretty standard.

Stop in and talk to someone. See what they have to offer. Ask if they offer free introductory classes.
