Up the west side BRD to onion, out the middle exit to 140 then up for a beer in denio then over to orovada.

 

Washing the truck after the black rock trip I noticed some oil spray all over the underside of the truck in the rear. I checked the diff fluid and it was good so I wasn’t too concerned but I checked it again after Slick Rock and it appears the seal/gasket where the driveline meets the rear axle assembly is leaking a little bit and the rotating of the driveline is throwing it everywhere. Is this seal an easy thing to replace or should I just call the shop that did my regear?

 

At least its an easy fix and like $3.

Just unbolt the driveshaft and remove the flange, replace the seal and bam?

 

Pretty much. You want to mark the bolt to the shaft or count the turns to get it off so you can put it back as close to the original position as possible.

Ordered a new oil seal from Dolan. Probably going to get some more diff fluid just in case I lose too much swapping it out. Also need to order some lube for my uniballs. TC says PFTE Dry Lube spray. @RelentlessFab is that what you guys run?

Yep, usually about monthly as well. Or after washing the rig down after a good wheeling trip. 1 bottle has lasted me about a year and a half too, just now starting to get low.

After doing some reading and thinking about possibilities for why my pinion seal is leaking I’m thinking it’s because I have a bad pinion angle.

I have been getting some vibes since going to 35s and that might be it. The gears were done when I had the BP51s and 285 tires. I had no vibes with the shock relocation. I had no vibes when I had LT and 285s for a week. And four days after going to the 35s is when I first notice the diff fluid on the underside of the truck. And then shortly after I started getting vibes at low speeds and stops. At first I thought maybe it was one of the wheels being out of balance but it kind of (to me at least) makes sense with that seal going out.

Any thoughts?

 

I don't think tires affect pinion angle(correct me if I'm wrong) but Pinion angle is based off of where the rear axle sits. Your suspension setup dictates that(taller leaf pack, longer shocks allowing more droop causing severe angles on your pinion). Maybe it was all the crazy flexing with the forklift? or the crazy flexing at slick rock. Just my thoughts on this.

 

Shims are cheap to try.

 

I think you’re right, if that was the issue though I would’ve thought I’d see it sooner. After talking with some other people who got regeared I guess it’s not that uncommon for that seal to fail though so I feel a little better about that. And I think I tracked down the majority of my vibes to my spacers. I pulled them tonight and went around the block and it seemed a lot better, still a tiny bit but a huge improvement so I might swing by discount and have them check the weights.

Definitely still going to look into some, especially once I put the new leaf pack in.

 

What about a carrier bearing drop? I've seen them but have no experience with them.

 

I’ve got the one that came with my BP51s in right now. I think it’s only like a half inch or so.

 

Took the truck into Discount Tire and they believe it’s from the tire tread being a bit uneven. The fronts are 2/32s off from each other but the rears are almost identical so they’re going to check balance and move them around and see if that helps with the vibes. Nates Precision swapped out my pinion seal this morning so hopefully no more diff leak! There’s a white third gen in their shop getting the LSK Long Travel front with a rear bedcage and 3.0 bypasses
