Had a bad cell in the F'n'J when it was 1 year old.
Just replaced the original battery in the Taco.

 

Drag the old girl out for some wheeling over the weekend.

I ordered one of those "gas hole" gas cap holders last week, before I left for the weekend, since they are the new "it thing" to have. Came in on Friday. Going to slap it on tonight.

 

@Cativelense I'm inclined to think either corrosion to hell or a bad cell..at least the Silverado battery should have given you some juice there. I suspect even the smaller car would have.

 

Not sure Chris... to be honest with you I don't remember seeing any corrosion on either the battery or the clamps. And since the new battery worked and it started right up after I put it in, I doubt there was any corrosion on the clamps.

EDIT: And not sure if this makes a difference... I actually bought the truck in October of 2013, as a brand new 14. The battery was the original.

 

I was just surprised to see it. When a 10 cent savings per vehicle is close to 6 figures a year in savings across a model year, it's interesting that they'd spend $50+ on something that they probably could have gotten away without.

 

I have one on my truck. Actually works well, my gas cap would always fall out when i would use the tether in the latch to hold it.

 

My F150 doesn't have a gas cap at all.

 

Still under 5 years, but hey stuff happens. I had a 1 year old battery with a bad cell. On the other hand, Cupcake's Rav4 lasted nearly 10 years.

Possible that you had corrosion and just knocked it loose in the process..but see what the test says.

 

I wonder if it has anything to do with the start/stop crap. I wouldn't be surprised if a normal battery couldn't tolerate that nonsense for very long.

Mine didn't either and it was awesome! I was surprised that my F250 has one. Not happy to be dealing with one again.

What on earth did your truck have instead of a cap?

 

Nothing, you just open the gas door and there's a metal flapper that you just stick the nozzle in. I'm sure there's some sort of check valve thing going on there but no cap.

On another note, I am lusting after a Ram truck now... the '19 1500 Big Horn is a nice looking truck. And they made the front end look better!

 

I hate the new Ram front ends! I really like the current ones. I'm sure the new one will grow on me but initial reactions are I like the new Durango front end though...

 

Yeah, there is some check valve thing in there. I know this because a friend of my wife ran out of gas on 495 right by our exit a year or two ago in a Ford Fusion. My wife wasn't around and the friend lives in Haverhill. So I had to meet her on the side of 495 with a gas can. But because of Ford's cap-less flapper thing, I had to then go to Home Depot to get a funnel with a neck long enough to hold open the valve to refill the car. That was a great afternoon I had forgotten about until now, thanks.

 

My '13 came with a funnel that was kept under the rear seats, with the jack and tire wrench. My wife's Escape I think has one in the trunk with the rear tire. Chances are, there was a funnel somewhere in that car, not to rub it in at all

 

Interesting...bet it's more likely to trip the CEL though.

 

Yup, I actually found that out a couple months ago. We were talking about that day and her boyfriend goes 'there's a funnel with the spare, why didn't you use that?'. I wanted to kill the girl haha

Edit - at the time though I didn't even think to check there. It was actually the first time I had seen the capless gas tanks before.
