Is this do-able? Please don’t tell me to just buy the right tool bc it’s only xx $. I know that would be better. Just wondering if anyone has crimped these clamps with dykes. I’m doing the boot slide mod using oem band clamps...

Buy the right tool. You have to clamp the ever living fuck out of it for it to not slide, and this is only do able with the proper tool. Hell, the tool has a 1/2" square on each handle so you can put breaker bars in for more leverage.

I tried to avoid buying the tool as well and my boot didn't hold for shit and came loose a couple days later.

I've had great luck using industrial size zip ties. The red, 3/8" wide ones seem to work the best.

sounds like a great way to chop into your band clamp and leave a burr that will cut your hose

It's cheaper to do it right the first time with the right tool. I value quality workmanship and take pride in making repairs. I'm a little anal about my truck though. The tool from Snap On was under 30 bucks and I've had it for 20 years and still works like a champ.

Done it before with dull pair of Screenshot_20180625-164039.jpg dikes. The tool is only 9 bux.

Ha. Two star review! No surprise. That’s why I asked: either buy a quality tool that I’ll likely use for a single job for $$$, or improvise.

anyway I ordered a $17 version from Amazon. I’ll see how useful it is.

A pair of end nippers, like you use to cut the nails to length on horse shoes works fine. If they can cut horse shoe nails, they will crimp those band clamps with ease.

+1 on this I’ve been using these on a half dozen cv’s at least they work great. I put the handles in a vice for max power!
