That would be the Kenwood TM-V71A.

The app I was using on my phone was APRSandroid which is pretty neat too. Gives live telemetry and you can post messages or just include info such as the frequency you're on and the group you're with. All that shows up as an icon on a map. IMO pretty well suited for events like this with people coming from different areas and also traveling in a split convoy. It's free and just requires signing up with your call sign.

Same unit I have as well. We picked each other up on the way in pretty well without having tuned them yet.

I want that APRS module info when you have a minute . pretty please. ;)

I'll be picking up a unit that works with Android phones.

The app on the phone is nice if you have occasional service. You can pre-download maps so all those features can be used offline and will be updated periodically when service is found.

The next step which is the item I'm talking about actually uses a radio frequency to get the live information. So after you download a map, you can always get live telemetry and whatever information you need that other group members decide to show. All privacy is at the users discretion.

I'll be writing a post that covers a few approaches:
    - Free cell phone use that uses internet
    - The device that doesn't require internet with use of Android phone
    - A raspberry pi 3 with Android on it or I'll try to source an iPhone equivalent paired with device.

Again, the real factor for the last two is no cell signal required because it uses radio which means the ability to keep tabs on the group when traveling everywhere.

The device that is prove to work with the APRSandroid AP is called Mobilelinkd TNC2.2
May work with other iPhone apps. I just haven't found any yet.

Perfect. On this trip I was able to map our route, post our position, display the 146.460 frequency that we were utilizing and put a note of TW Waterfall in case there were any other TW members up here who kind of knew about it and we're hams, they could call us up.

Had an awesome time this weekend. Thanks to Rob for setting everything up and credit to the group 2 lead, tail, and relay communicators. Jason was spot on with relaying our route and making sure the group knew what was going on. Every stop on the trip kept getting better and better. Would have been nice if the weather was a bit warmer for swimming but Ill have to keep some of those places in mind for future camping trips. Now comes the worse part of the trip. Unpacking, cleaning, and drying all the camping stuff. Was going to set everything up today but was windy and raining when I left for work this morning. Trying to spread stuff out in the basement so it can dry.
Credit to my wife for most of the pictures.

Definitely a good trip - I bought some waterproofing spray to coat the tent with as I had a few drips but otherwise it was a good 'dry' run with the setup. I definitely overpacked and will pack less next time.

Thank you everyone for all the tips and pointers for everything - @Subway4X4 @Grand dude thank you for manning the comms with me in group 2!

Somehow you guys in Group 2 got conned into letting two Asians lead your group and managed to stay alive and accident free!

Man it really sounds like a ham setup has a lot of bells & whistles. Maybe something to consider.....of course as I'm buttoning up my CB install I say that :frusty:

It can do a lot, but it's nothing too complicated. With that being said I'm in Nashua NH in my driveway listening to a repeater in Waltham W1MLH , 30 miles away. The mobile rigs have some reach to them in regards to traditional use. I'm a fan so far
