I asked sumosprings customer service the same question, and this was their response. I don't have personal experience with the 500lb springs, but the 1000lbs haven't seemed to harshen the ride when I'm unloaded.

For most cases I would recommend the 47 as it will provide for more muscle without compromising current ride quality.
If you don't believe you need the extra muscle because you are never loaded to much then the 500 is more than enough.
The SumoSprings have a progressive nature, this being said they get stronger with more load and are soft to compress when not under load."

 

Thank you, sir. Sounds like the 47 would be best for the typical RTT setup with gear. I did the Firestone Ride Rites on my 2012 and liked them, but they were a pain to install (not hard, but the nuts and bolts for the brackets almost require baby fingers) and require messing with air pressure for different loads. I've looked at these before, seem like a great option. A little pricey for what they are, but simple and look to be easy to install.

 

So I've seen people with shells on their truck with larger RTTs on that extended over to the cab rack (and either resting, or attached, to the cab rack) and/or hang pretty considerably over the rear of the camper.

I know the bed and cab aren't as one when wheeling, but has anyone seen or experienced any damage to the truck or RTT as a result?

I'm considering getting an ARE shell and a CVT Mt Rainier or ikamper, so I'm wanting to know if it's something to just be careful/smart with or if it's typically a bad idea.

 

I have the rainier mounted on a leer shell. It hangs over the cab but is lifted about 1/2” above the shark fin. No problems with movement. I would not fix it to the cab though. Have you looked how much those move while off road!? I would think it would fatigue any thing aluminum, like the support rails for the tent, very quickly.

 

Got some new mounting brackets for my tent. My rack is made from 1-3/4 tubing and did not like the mounts my tent came with so I picked these up from a local fab shop.

 

Those are a great idea!!

 

Mount the tent to the cap or the cab, but not both. They move quite a bit relative to each other. I'd leave an inch or so for flex.

How’s this working for you? I just ordered me some of those clamps off summit racing.

 

The clamps work great. Holds the tent down nice and sturdy. Would definitely recommend them. They just look nice and clean too not like the one that come with the tents. The only thing I did to mine was I grind down where the bolts go through on the nut side. I just wanted more threads on the bolt to be showing so the lock nut could do its job.

 

You don't want it hanging over the rear? I would want to make full use of the rack. I have an access cab, so rack space is important to me.

That is a badass truck though!

 

Set up my tent and my friends yesterday night, took about 1 hour each with 2 people working on each. CVT Mt Shasta’s. Super excited to use it, first night in it will be Friday!

Has anyone sprayed a waterproofing spray on these tents? Like CampDry? Or should I just leave well enough alone?

Should be fine without it. I've been in a tepui before in heavy rain and thunderstorms and it was solid, absolutely no leaks or water.

 

Pretty bummed. Brand new Tepui tent only used once and it has very thin spots on the rain fly. It looks like I have two options. Pay for it to go to Tepui to see if they would replace it OR return to REI and be out of a tent while they inspect, file a claim, ship the tent back and wait for a new one to be delivered. Anyone else go through this?

 

I had the exact same problem with mine last year. Luckily for me I realized the issue when the tent leaked on me at the NW overland rally where Tepui had a rep onsite. I talked to him and he gave me his contact info, I sent him an email when I got home and they sent me a brand new rain fly. I haven't had a chance to use it in the rain yet but this one looks much better than the original.

 

Thanks! Maybe it's worth a call to see if they can just swap the rain fly. Who wants to ship these things all over the place anyway? Doesn't make sense. REI already confirmed they have to take the whole thing back and follow the process.

 

I bet if you call them they can work with you. The rain fly can pack down pretty small when it's off. All they asked for from me was to email a receipt for proof and date of purchase.

Does yours have the plastic snap buckles on the straps or does it have just the strap through the cinch slider to snug it down?

 

Yeah I just emailed them. My tent has buckles I do believe.
